Wow just had the most bullshit encounter ever

Pirate Trap
The Pirates immediately board 2 fucking rockmen and a mantis RIGHT into my weapons bay (which doesn't even make sense because they only had a 2 person teleporter). No matter what I pit against them, I will die (I only have 1 mantis and 1 rockman, rest are human).
Not only that, but the pirates are armed with a high level missile launcher, and two fucking high level burst lasers that are guaranteeing I will have my shields down (and the burst lasers have a magic ability of not only starting fires, but hitting all my rooms at once). Also, because its an enemy ship, they magically have the ability of getting their entire flagship-level barrage off on me right before I can.
Basically, no way to win. Most of my systems are down within a minute. And I had some pretty damn good equipment at the time too.

Open every door except the medbay doors. Force them to fight in the medbay or suffocate, gg.
Is there a mod that will let me pick what ever race I want for a crew?

That was the plan until my O2 went out literally within 10 seconds of their teleporting in thanks to their missile launcher

Don't think so. You could try manually modding the ship so that it has the correct crew you want, but it's a little difficult.

It does make sense that 3 got on to the thing because you docked with them and they walked on. i doubt 3 teleported at the same time

Thats a good point
Still doens't make the encounter any less bullshit lol
"roguelike"
"roguelike"
what
hes saying 'deal with it' when you get bad luck because that's the name of the game
[editline]20th October 2012[/editline]
it looks surprisingly easy to make new ships, although they have to replace old ones
I might try replacing the vortex with something better
It would be cool if there was a mod where if you have crew members boarding the enemy ship and your ship gets destroyed you can kill the enemy crew and take their ship.
I wouldn't mind have multi deck ships. Or to fight a space station, or board it.
"roguelike"
Face it; you've lost the term 'roguelike', and I'm not the one declaring this, popular culture has done that. Call games like nethack rogue clones or something.
What are you going on about
what
Didn't really mean to sound like a douche, but in games like these you will always die in a way that makes you cry "bullshit!"

Except it's not a roguelike. If you really want to use the word rogue to describe it, then it's a "rogue-ish-sorta-kinda-like-alitltebit..."
We have this argument every 5 pages or so: lets not have it again.
rougelike
It's an argument that only exists because of resistance to the ever evolving language of communication. Through common usage, the term 'roguelike' has come to mean more than originally intended, and you people making a deal over it should just accept that.

Do note my first post was in quotes and that one said "games like these", not roguelikes.
Awwww yeahh
Beat the game on normal :)
Engie cruiser, Ion 2 weapon plus the Ion Bomb kept their shields locked down for the most part, and whatever system I wanted disabled
Level 3 cloak to dodge the power surges and missiles
Level 1 Anti-Ship Drone for constant whittling down
Halberd Beam for main damage (2 damage per room, I average 6 damage with it).
4th level shields
Anti-personall drone with fully upgraded doors for last part (made it really easy)
Anti-missile drone for missile defense against at least one missile when I couldn't cloak
Pretty much just kept their shields offline, occasionally their missiles, and threw up the cloak when really bad shit started coming in (missiles or power surges).

I like it, though.
FTL is not a roguelike. Not even the devs think it is.

It's not even turn-based.
real time is just a string of infinitesimal turns anyway

And the other one was the Steam page for it.
And they both say the same thing. Your point?
Who the fuck cares seriously
It's similar to a rougelike so the term "rougelike" is apropreate in many contexts for the game, even if it doesn't fit the complete definition. You get an accurate idea of the game by hearing that word in association with it, which is why it doesn't matter
I'm really surprised that this blew up as much as it did.
I really want to buy it, but can't help thinking it'll be in some sort of ludicrous sale or pack pretty soon.
Didn't expect to see 13 replies so fast. Then I found out everyone's just talking about whether or not it's a roguelike.
As far as I'm concerned, FTL is a roguelike just as much as Portal is a "Doom-like". It's 3D, first person and you get a weapon (sort of), and the levels aren't what you'd see in your day-to-day life, but that's about where the similarities end.
In the same way, FTL is a challenging, difficult game with a randomly generated map and a lot of random chance deciding the success or failure of your mission as Rogue is. But from what I know about roguelikes, of which I've played a few, that's where the similarities end.
I think it would be better to assign FTL and Rogue a new genre. Like "Masochism" or something.
In any case, the devs knew people wouldn't see eye-to-eye on this themselves.
