fucking hell you guys seriously this argument happens every 5 pages, let people call it what they will, if someone identifies it as a roguelike then let them.
Who the fuck cares seriously
It's similar to a rougelike so the term "rougelike" is apropreate in many contexts for the game, even if it doesn't fit the complete definition. You get an accurate idea of the game by hearing that word in association with it, which is why it doesn't matter
wut? You mean, roguelike?
:v:
Quick question:
The basis of beam weaponry's shield piercing is in how much damage per room they do, correct? So if a beam weapon does 2 damage per room, it'll be able to pierce 1 shield and do 1 damage per room (if another shield is not in place).
Is my assumption correct, and are 0 damage beams (Bio, Fire) an exception to this?

I believe they can still pierce shields by circumventing them, that's what I get from the weapon descriptions of them at least. Haven't put it to the test though.

I'm pretty sure shields stop fire and bio beams outright.

I'm pretty sure shields stop bio and fire beams outright. It's been a while since I used either though so I could be wrong.

yeah, no beam weapon in the game can bypass shields iirc
yeah, no beam weapon in the game can bypass shields iirc
glaive beam can
glaive beam can
Any beam more than one damage can. A Glaive goes through 2 shields, Halberd through 1, but they both only do 1 damage then (2 damage if Glaive cuts through only one shield). Really handy if you just don't have the laser firepower to take down all of the shields, but still want to nick away at subsystems.
The halberd beam can hit through low shields as well, and not to mention the Artillery beam, which completely ignores shields.
Thanks guys. I'm fairly familiar with the basic concepts of beam weaponry, it's just that half of them seem entirely inconsistent at times in regards to what they actually do.
Too be fair though, I almost never end up using beam weaponry out of circumstance than choice. High level beam weaponry tends to get sold to beef up my ship if it's found early on, and if by some chance I stumble upon it late game it tends to get sold to maintain my already beefed up/dying ship.

An illogical design. More so because of the rooms on the side.
Id say a much better design for a ship would be...
Medbay is central and is next to a four person telleport AND near doors and O2
Dual engines and shields (two small rooms rather than one big room) separate weapons is a stranger option but could work
No other system is far away.
Airlocks at every corner.
Starts with either two dual lasers or an ion cannon 2

It's not meant to be perfect. It's intentionally imbalanced, like the game.
Anyways, further spread out rooms are harder to it with beams.

precisely, i initially had a much more clustered design, but I decided to make it a little more complex to make it more challenging
for example, I originally had weapons and drones in opposite places, but I wanted to make it so that you needed to almost exile a crew member into the far corner if you want to man weapons
Reached the flagship with my crystal cruiser (My weapons were both default crystal weapons, a heavy laser, fire beam, and MK-II anti ship drone). Got to the second phase and I sent a pair of Mantis to their drone controls along with a Crystal person to keep the crew out. I almost got them too, but then my ship was torn to pieces by the drone spam.
I did better than I hoped I would though! Cloaking is a great help against the flagship.
I started thinking of a practical way of applying that "I want to raid and hijack enemy ships" desire people seemed to have. Gave me the idea of a way to apply that in-game which ultimately summed up to an alternate gamemode that essentially had you doing a sort of survival game, working your way up the ranks as a space pirate. As opposed to having a clear cut goal and the rebel fleet to race against you'd be playing against your own infamy, both system side and in the greater universe as you become more renowned and make more enemies.
Bit more of a fantasy than anything really, but it does leave me hoping for some possible additional content in the future.

are you making the ebon hawk
i love you
[editline]22nd October 2012[/editline]
oh my god the design is very true to the actual layout as well, please tell me you will release this when it's done
i think i might get in trouble for giving out the .dat files, but if you know how to pack them I will gladly release all the bits and pieces you need when it's done
[editline]22nd October 2012[/editline]
ps what systems should it start with?
Well systems seems pretty good with what you have, weapons should definitely be two (?) burst laser II's, due to the mounted turrets on the Ebon Hawk. I'm pretty sure there's a top and bottom one, anyhow.

oh and drone control

starts with 2 dual lasers, which is a pretty formidable arsenal to start with
seems overpowered now, but we'll see
Just make it come standard with its notoriously awful shielding system
geez this thread is dead

I'm finally happy with the sprite, now I just need to make gibs and (somehow) the cloaked sprite

I love you, please take my children.
why are you guys calling it a rougelike, my game isnt red!!!!!
Whilst trying out the second Rock cruiser I got a few people asking me to rescue their ship from pirates. Because I started out with the fire bomb, I offered to incinerate the enemy crew for them (Not allowed to destroy the ship).
I managed to burn two of the three enemy crew members to death, by this time the fire had almost destroyed the ship. It spread and killed the final person, and the people thanked me for saving their ship. Almost immediately after they rewarded me, their ship blew up. Tragic.

Can you give it those dinky 1 shot burst lasers that some early pirates/rebels use? That might work.
What are some of the good mods right now?
Can you give it those dinky 1 shot burst lasers that some early pirates/rebels use? That might work.
I decided I'll only start with enough power to charge one of the lasers, so you have to spend a little to get all the firepower
likewise only 2 blips in drones, so you can only power 1 droid initially
