Holy shit I love the Anti-Bio beam. It feels so evil but it's so good. Tore like 4 people apart in 1 shot with it like a professional.
This happened to me yesterday. So close :(
all this game needs is a ship builder and an in-game browser to download other player's ship's they made
it's actually quite easy to make your own ships or edit the layouts of existing ones the only downside is that you have to replace stock ships to use them tonnes of ship mods here http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11
Tonight, gentlemen, I bring you a sad story. I started up the game again and realized that my previous ship, the Disparity, had been destroyed by boarders a few days ago. I decided to go for the Kestrel-class achievement 'Tough Little Ship' to unlock the Red-Tail configuration, so the RMS Titanic left its dock to face the wild galaxy. After a few minor battles, I chanced upon a Pike Beam floating in space and added it to my armament, replacing the default Artemis launcher. I started kicking ass left and right with my beautiful new discovery, only to happen upon a second Pike Beam in the third sector. Lady Luck smiled on me yet again - a friendly space station gave me a second Burst Laser II shortly after. The RMS Titanic quickly defeated any threat that it happened upon - it even endured a series of vicious solar flares while critical repairs were made to damaged systems. By the Last Stand, I had all of my ship's systems fully upgraded, along with a surplus of scrap, fuel, and a fully repaired hull. Confronting the Rebel Flagship, the RMS Titanic fought the enemy through two battles, despite a close call with rampant Boarding Drones. The ship's plight was becoming increasingly noticeable, as the superstructure was heavily damaged - but without any repair stations available, the crew bravely jumped into the final battle, knowing that death was inevitable. The Titanic used its deadly weapons extensively, but with the constant threat of boarders and the evasion skill of the Flagship's captain, the ship's weapons were too inaccurate, and the hull broke apart after a final barrage, drifting into empty space. Captain Kapalka, Weapons Officer Mara, and Shield Officer Williams died at their posts as the RMS Titanic disintegrated. [t]http://i.imgur.com/4gxgq.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/pTWIz.jpg[/t]
easy or normal?
easy or normal?
Easy. FTL is already frustrating enough without being on Normal.
So my uncle just bought me FTL as a sort of early Christmas present (because he's awesome ) and I'm on my first playthrough. I'm currently at sector 6, I think. Aaaand I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. Is there any way out of this? I'm out of missiles, so I've only got my Burst Laser Mk. II, which can't get through their three layers of shields. I'm out of fuel, so I can't run. My shields also aren't enough to stop their weapons. And my ship is also about to explode. This happened after I put out a distress signal to get some fuel, btw. This is also normal difficulty.

This is also normal difficulty.
To be honest, there's no chance that you'll escape. Without any fuel, you're stranded, and without weapons, you can't take them down. I usually have the crew commit seppuku by opening all of the airlocks, but if you want to hang on, it's your choice.
Well, I'm slightly better off now than I was in that screenshot. I have one less hull point (currently at 6 points), but my shields are back up. And even if I lose, oh well. I unlocked the Engi ship at least. This was a rather unlucky run, though. As far as extra weapons go, I only got the Breach missile from an abandoned space station (I think). A pirate ship offered me a weapon at one point, but it was waaay too expensive. So I've been stuck with my default Burst Laser II and Artemis missile. I also didn't get a whole lot of opportunities to obtain fuel. I'm gonna keep fighting this guy and see how long I last just because screw pirates. I refuse to make their lives easy. [editline]Faster Than Editing Stuff[/editline] Oh, hey. Their drone disappeared. Now I'm that much less likely to not live forever! :v: Wait no. They can't get through my shields at all now. I'M INVINCIBLE.
after a while (~1-2 minutes) the ship jumps away. so if you can survive
I was recently stuck in a stalemate with part 2 of the flagship battle because my laser couldn't get through the shield, and their drone shot down my missiles, but I finally managed to beat them by glitching out the AI by having two guys attack their AI Control while tow other ran between rooms distracting them.
Is it already well-known that Ion weapon charges can be shot down mid-flight by lasers (and perhaps other projectiles as well)? Because I just saw it happen. And it was awesome. :v: [editline]11th November 2012[/editline] These must be some pretty desperate pirates. Even though they can't really do anything to me, they're still trying. It has been several minutes and they're not jumping off. This game is going to end in a stalemate. What an anti-climax. :pwn: [editline]11th November 2012[/editline] I just realized that I'm inside a nebula and my sensors are working. See the screenshot above. [editline]11th November 2012[/editline] So I quit that run and tried the Engi ship... I ran into a dead end, had nowhere to go except straight back towards the fleet, and got owned by an elite fighter. The moral of this story: ALWAYS watch where you're going.
Managed to beat the flagship and nab the Rock ship on normal with the Adjudicator. Rock Plating + Zoltan Shield is fucking amazing.
My second attempt with the Kestrel ends in disaster: I jumped away from an auto scout thing that had three layers of shields to another auto scout with three layers of shields AND two drones. Both times I've used the Kestrel, I've been unable to get good weapons. This is frustrating. What did I learn? The Kestrel Type A's default weapon loadout sucks. Fuel is precious. Two- and three-layer shields are really awesome but really expensive. And this game is frustrating by nature, but still awesome anyway. I think I'm gonna get some achievements and try the Kestrel Type B. I hear it's substantially better than the Type A. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline] [t]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/902105538123799540/F46E0E276C51EC32441787B134111BDF7B3D21C0/[/t] This is after my FIRST JUMP of my little achievement run thingie.
dude what, 5 power into engines and you don't even have a second shield layer? the enemy already has 3 :v: have you been visiting many places in each sector? if you rush through you will always get out-gunned, you should be spending so much time in each sector that you only get to the exit a couple of turns before the rebel fleet
Type B Kestrel is amazing, it is what I finally beat the game with.
dude what, 5 power into engines and you don't even have a second shield layer? the enemy already has 3 :v: have you been visiting many places in each sector? if you rush through you will always get out-gunned, you should be spending so much time in each sector that you only get to the exit a couple of turns before the rebel fleet
I've been trying to take my time, but I keep running out of it and of fuel as well. I get the feeling I've just been generally unfortunate. My emphasis on engines in that run was probably because I figured they'd be more helpful than shields since shields don't stop missiles and bombs and get messed up by ion weapons. Lesson learned: It's better to bank on a guarantee (like shields and their guaranteed ability to stop most kinds of lasers and beams) than a chance (like upgraded engines and the extra chance to dodge stuff that they provide). My observation on the difficulty settings thus far has been that Normal is just slightly harder than it ought to be and Easy is just way too easy. On normal, I get just barely enough scrap to get by, but on Easy, I always end up with huge surpluses of scrap.
Normal was designed to be normal in "rougelike" terms - in that the "normal" experience that one would get while playing a rougelike. AKA, dieing is apart of the plan. It's made to be hard. That said, it's a lot easier once you know some tricks and what weapons and such to get. I.E. the final boss is much easier if you can teleport crew members and cloak, because then you can automatically dodge any missle or shot that comes at you (cloak), and send crew in to take out their weapons, of which they can't repair (teleport). If you don't plan on using drones you need to upgrade engines asap, so you have enough time to focus fire on the enemy's weapons if they are using missle tech. This is where ion weapons/bombs come REALLY in handy. Sure you'll always get at least one missile shooting at you, but if you have a good evade chance then you don't need to worry (half the time). Or alternatively, just get Cloak - since that will evade missles for you 9/10.
I've already read up on the flagship boss fight (and most of this game as well, actually). Sounds like it's actually rather easy once you kill all but one of their crew members (with the guy in the triple-shot laser room being spared), since all they can do at that point is shoot their cheap little Burst Laser Mk. II knockoff at you. All you really have to worry about after that is the huge drone swarm and the teleporter attack thing, and those seem like they'd be pretty easy to just dodge with good engines and cloaking. What I really, really don't understand is how an enemy ship's cloak can stop my weapons from charging. That makes no sense at all. Without actually doing something to my ship (which it shouldn't be doing), how can it stop me from powering up my weapons?
found some fanart: done by a guy named Santo

he fell out of an airlock [editline]14th November 2012[/editline] on accident, of course. [editline]14th November 2012[/editline] uppity, shiny pebble man
So even though I've unlocked the second Kestrel layout, I'm trying again with the first layout, because I would like to beat the game for the first time on Normal difficulty as the Type A Kestrel. I've made it to the beginning of the second sector. So far, so good. Note that I got all of this stuff for free. Space people are really freaking generous when they're not trying to blow your ship into subatomic particles. Also note the rock dude on the left. I've got everything manned already. Is it just me, or is the Anti-Bio Beam really, really common? This is like the third one in total that I've gotten (for free, even). The universe seems to be brimming with the things. [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] I just got a hull missile. [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] ...And a hull smasher laser (Mk. I). It's like it knows that the last three times or so, it didn't give me any weapons at all, and now it's apologizing or something.
I seem to have done tons of games and never seen the Weapon Pre-Fire Chamber, but now I see it every one.
I seem to have done tons of games and never seen the Weapon Pre-Fire Chamber, but now I see it every one.
The "Weapon Pre-igniter," you mean. :eng101: I just came across a pirate ship (a Federation Bomber) that couldn't get through my shields and had only two-layer shields. After a few unsuccessful attempts to assassinate their crew, I beamed the two rock guys (whom I now have because this run has been ridiculously lucky thus far) once again into their medbay to try to destroy it. This attempt also failed. The Engi and the Rock dude, who were the only crew on the ship got there before my rock guys could wreck the medbay. I moved them out of the medbay into the engine room, where the enemy crew guys immediately followed them. It looked as if I was going to have to pull my Rock guys out of there again (for the third time?), until I realized something: I had an Anti-Bio Beam! :v: The Rock dude retreated to the medbay to heal up and stuff, while the Engi continued shooting at my boarders. Right as he stepped in, I fired the hull smasher to break the shields and sliced the two enemy guys in half with the Anti-Bio beam. And it was awesome. And now I'm filthy rich because boarding gets you way too much scrap and because I had just gotten a scrap recovery arm that gets me even more scrap.
Tempted to fire this up again. Is there any word on an expansion or add-ons? Really would like to see more random events and an option to play infinitely.
I am freaking stupid. I went for a boarding run, sending a couple rock dudes to kill a couple beat-up mantis guys. But I forgot to turn off autofire on my burst laser Mk. II. RIGHT as I ported them over, the laser fired and blew up the ship. R.I.P. adamantine rock guys. And now I'm down to two boring humans. In sector six. With the boss that I'm not prepared for coming up. [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] My main downfall was probably the number of crewmembers I lost. I lost one human in a boarding run, another when I opened an escape pod with a Mantis in it, and both of my rock guys in that failtastic boarding run. That's four. I would have had six crew members instead of just two when I went into that battle had I just been a bit more careful with them. [editline]17th November 2012[/editline] I'd say that pacifism run went well. I got bored of trying to beat the game and decided to go for the "Coming in for my Pacifism run!" achievement. After I succeeded and made it to sector 5, I opted to see just how far I could keep on going. As you can see, I made it the whole way to the end of the game and went out in style. After waving hi to the flagship (and getting shot a lot), I ported back and forth between two spots until I "lost." A couple more screenshots, to show that I really did wave hi to the flagship and get shot a lot: [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/902106354701896507/35FE6DFF69797803113FCDD7188BEB678BA1F7A5/[/t] [t]http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/902106354701979610/35CAFFDD1F567C54697281A44102473472DADAD9/[/t] [editline]4x Burst Laser Mk. II[/editline] What's kinda funny is that I unlocked three more achievements simultaneously as soon as I jumped to sector 8: Ballistophobia, No Redshirts Here, and Federation Base in Range. :v:
I just got the damaged stasis pod. Here's hoping I can unlock the Crystal ship... [editline]Glaive Beam.[/editline] Optimistic indeed. The ship looks ridiculously hard to unlock. Here's hoping I can at least get the Crystal crew member...
Oh man I have like completely stopped following this game for a while. Has modding gone anywhere ? Was any new content added ? As fun as the game is on its own it kinda lacked base content in my opinion.
I got the Crystal guy! Here's hoping I get a Rock Homeworlds next sector... [editline]Basic Laser.[/editline] For anyone who might be wondering, if you have eight crew members and you get one more, the game tells you to dismiss one of the nine crew members that you now have.
