[QUOTE=BeardyDuck;39062800]maybe drainwater confused the unlockable fed ship with the default fed ship.[/QUOTE]
Whoops you are right sir. I forgot about the unlockable one.
Got this game in the Steam Sale and the farthest I have gotten is to the last sector with the Flagship two jumps away as an Engi ship, and then I died. That was my third play through too
FTL might be more about Luck, but I feel like it's okay. Half the fun of the game for me is that moment where I realized I'm fucked, even after trying everything to avoid it.
I agree. I really like the luck factor. Makes me feel like an actual starship captain. Shit happens Shogun gotta deal with it.
Except Shogun (meaning me) usually fails to do so and dies in a horrible fire while getting impaled by mantis soldiers.
the only thing i'd want to change about the "luck" factor is make it so that if I'm doing everything I can right, at least there's a glimmer of hope
i haven't seen a glimmer of hope yet when I'm drowning
Got all the way to the second stage of the Flagship before I died. Disabled 2/3 of it's weapons, but man, do those drones fuck you up, or what? Couldn't get past the shields with my guns so everyone was on repair duty but before I get send out the hull repair drones, I died. My best play through yet and still couldn't kill the flagship, lol. How many play throughs did it take all of you guys to finally defeat the flagship?

Nine. But that was exclusively as the Kestrel Type A and exclusively on Normal difficulty. And deliberately so, because I wanted to show that it was possible, and also to show off just how amazing I am at this game.
My advice for the flagship is this: Get a teleporter and some good boarders, preferably at least one Mantis and especially at least one Crystal. Teleport the boarders into the individual weapon rooms, [I]EXCEPT[/I] for the burst laser room thing, starting with the missile launcher, and the the ion weapon thing, and then the beam weapon, making sure to wreck the weapons' systems while you're at it. If you kill all of the flagship's crew, the ship becomes a self-repairing AI ship, and you definitely don't want that to happen. If you have at least three layers of shields, the flagship is now harmless. After you have those weapons shut down, try to wipe out the crew in the main body of the ship (which is way too easy if you've got a Crystal crew member, but is difficult, risky, and requires careful planning otherwise). If you do it right, that one guy in the burst laser thing will be the only one left alive. At that point, you're free to wreck all of the flagship's systems (though you definitely don't want to break the O2, 'cause you need that last guy to be alive and not asphyxiated) and pwn it with your weapons.
During the second stage, break the triple missile's system before anything else, then the drone system (to stop the boarding drone, the beam drone, and the attack drone), and then the beam weapon. If you've got a cloak, make sure it's only got one power in it, so it has time to recharge between power surges, and cloak once the power surge drones start attacking. Don't cloak too soon or too late, and don't put more than one power into the system, because cloaking does not delay power surges like it does weapon volleys. If you're desperate, you can try shooting the drones in the drone swarm down with your weapons (which I can personally confirm is possible) by swapping your weapons between slots (if necessary) and firing them when the drones move directly in the way.
Ion weapons, beam weapons, and a weapon pre-igniter augment really help during the third phase, as you're going to have to punch through at least one ridiculously tough Zoltan shield, which the flagship starts with and can regenerate with certain power surges. Cloaking really, really helps survive the super weapon power surges a lot. As far as I can tell, the super weapon fires 7 heavy lasers, which is easily survivable if you've got four layers of shields and maxed out engines. If you have a cloak, make sure it has only one power in it and do NOT cloak to dodge the first volley from the missile launcher, or else it will not finish charging in time for the power surge. Same procedure as the first two phases, mostly, except you've got at least one Zoltan shield to worry about. Get that missile launcher offline ASAP, and then wreck the systems and shoot that ship up. Note that breaking the shields system will not shut down the ship's Zoltan shield, nor will it prevent it from regenerating a new one.
Hope this helps.

You need the crew to run back and forth across the ship until the artillery beam fires.
This is legitimately the farthest I've ever made it in FTL with the "Grumpy" crew.

I have to go to work, but I beat the first stage of the Flagship. I'll be back with the exciting conclusion of the fates of the Grumps later.
EDIT: I had time to get one more session in, and the Grumps were promptly obliterated in the second stage. Don't know if I'm ever going to have a better crew either.
how do you get new crew more frequently? I hate only having 3 and I've made it all the way to the end several times only getting one additional crew member if that. there's gotta be a trick i'm missing
Anyone else game to make a ship tier list?
To help us get started, here's how many layers of shields the ships can damage other ships through with their starting weaponry without expending any missiles or drone parts, or using a boarding party, with some very annoying superscript note markers mixed in:
Indefinite - The Osprey[sup]1[/sup], Nisos[sup]1,2[/sup], Noether
3 - Red-Tail, Bravais
2 - The Kestrel[sup]2[/sup], The Nesasio, DA-SR 12
1 - The Vortex, Man of War[sup]3[/sup], Shivan[sup]3[/sup], The Adjudicator[sup]2[/sup]
0 - The Gila Monster[sup]3,4[/sup]
Notes: [sup]1[/sup]The Federation Cruisers start with artillery beams which require no resources to fire and pierce all shields (except Zoltan shields, afaik). [sup]2[/sup]Starts with a missile weapon and a supply of missiles. [sup]3[/sup]Starts with a bomb weapon and a supply of missiles. [sup]4[/sup]Starts with a crew teleporter.
The Torus, the Bulwark, and the Stormwalker start without weapons that can deal hull damage without consuming missiles. They rely on either drone parts, missiles, and/or boarding parties to deal hull damage to other ships.
The Basilisk and the Carnelian start completely without weapons, but they start equipped with four-person teleporter pads instead.
And here's [url=http://ftlwiki.com/wiki/Ships]ftlwiki.com's Ships page[/url] for reference.
What do you guys think? Is it a silly idea, or is it worth trying (or both)?

Crew are just plain hard to come by. You can hire them out of shops, but that's expensive.
If you successfully kill the crew of an enemy ship, there is a chance that you'll get another crew member. Some blue medbay options will net you a crew member.
I highly recommend upgrading your medbay to level 2 as soon as it's convenient, btw. So many events give you blue options if you have a lvl2 medbay, and some of them either prevent one of your crew from dying or win you a new crew member.

Oh no way, I had no idea.
Thanks, that's awesome.
Just had a look at data.dat and found the "DEAD_CREW_DEFAULT" event that pops up when you've killed the other ship's crew. Out of eight possibilities, two of them get you a bunch of fuel, one gets you a new crew member, one gets you a weapon, and the rest give you normal (high) boarding rewards. So you've got a 12.5% chance to get a crew member, a 12.5% chance to get a weapon, a 25% to get scrap and fuel, and a 50% to get normal boarding stuff. The weapon and the crew member are randomly determined, btw.
Tier lists are fun. Go for it.
As long as we don't start calling people bad for using one ship or the other.
Sometimes this game pisses me off. Got all the way to the Last Sector with 4/4 shields 2 amazingly good weapons, shittons of drones and then the flagship got 2 jumps away from the base and lost. That's like 2 hours wasted. Ugh.

If I get that far in another play through, I'll probably just back up a saved game just in case. I kind of think it's really dumb that you can't save like in other games so you have to start ALL over again when you die. It was okay the first couple of times but now I'm just angry that I got so far and was so sure I could win and then nope. Blurgh.
is there any way to prevent boarding ships from boarding and completely being dicks to my crew?
[editline]4th January 2013[/editline]
fighting boarding ships is literally the most boring and bullshit in ftl so far.
[QUOTE=Rainhorror;39087664]I kind of think it's really dumb that you can't save like in other games so you have to start ALL over again when you die.[/QUOTE]
You're kind of missing the point. The game isn't designed with completing it in mind.

yeah
fight em in your med bay, they'll heal while they're fighting and won't die
also upgrade doors to slow them and drain them of oxygen when you can.
[QUOTE=BeardyDuck;39087843]is there any way to prevent boarding ships from boarding and completely being dicks to my crew?[/QUOTE]
Zoltan shields. They can't be 'ported through.
Otherwise, you can wreck their teleporter really fast before they can use it, but that pretty much requires a weapons pre-igniter and some pretty mean weapons.
Or you can just get level 3 doors and watch the boarders suffocate to death before they even get through a single door. :v:
Okay, here's a quick-and-dirty draft of a tier list. Read at your own risk.
A: Red-Tail, Bravais, Noether
B: The Osprey, Man of War
C: Nisos, Bulwark, The Torus, The Kestrel, The Gila Monster, Carnelian
D: The Adjudicator, Shivan, The Stormwalker, The Basilisk
E: The Nesasio, DA-SR 21, The Vortex
Thoughts?
I haven't actually played as most of these ships yet, so I judged them by their starting weaponry, systems, crew, and augments instead. I'm also judging by how easy it would be to beat the game as each ship.
what's an easy ship to get after the first engie ship(the drone one) and the stealth cruiser with no shields?
[QUOTE=HumanAbyss;39088835]what's an easy ship to get after the first engie ship(the drone one) and the stealth cruiser with no shields?[/QUOTE]
The Zoltan cruiser. It's just dialogue, a quest, and then some more dialogue. There is no combat involved at all, except perhaps with hostile ships on the way to the quest marker. There aren't even any blue options or other requirements.
Great, after a fight with a fucking Mantis Cruiser and getting boarded by two Mantis, two member died in their way to the medic bay due to a missile, my zoltan couldn't get out of the fight with the mantis at time and after killing the mantis, my Engi is trapped in the medic bay with like 1 hp. Every system but weapons is broken, my O2 level is 0%,if I get out of the Medic Bay I'm dead.
Help me.
Please.
EDIT: Great, I forgot I had scrap left. I upgraded my medic bay to max, and I managed to repair the O2 system before getting to low on health. Now we play the waiting game until the O2 levels are back to 100%.
EDIT2:
My Engi eventually died. Against the 2nd stage of the Flagship. He survived half and a system more before reaching the Flagship. I only had to fight a couple of ships before reaching a store and spending everything I had repairing my ship. Later I bought a drone system and got with it a defense drone, which helped me. But it couldn't help against the swarm of robots.
RIP O'Sean, made 51 repairs and mastered 4 skills. And survived alone to something most Engis wouldn't have.
I always name my starting crew after friends. It's my goal every game to ensure my starting crew survive to the victory screen. If I lose one of them I usually go back to the hanger; it's victory together or no victory at all!
My first time beating the game I managed to keep them all alive until literally less than a second before the victory screen popped up. Weapon Specialist Vexatious was lost in the line of duty, ensuring our weapons systems continued to function to the last. ;_;7
[QUOTE=E-102 Gamma;39088676]Zoltan shields. They can't be 'ported through.[/QUOTE]
I always get pre-fight dialogues "You don't know how the intruders managed to pass through your shields..." with the Zoltan shield. Unless there's another Zoltan ship besides the Adjudicator?
I'm unable to downmload Gronaks mod manager... Could someone give me a mirror?

Zoltan shields can't stop intruders from appearing on your ship if an event calls for it. They can, however, stop enemy ships from actually using a crew teleporter system, either to teleport people to or from your ship.
1 mission in easy: dead at sector 2
2 mission on easy: dead at the last sector (7?)
3 mission on fucking hard: Get the game down because its 2 in the morning oh fuck i need to sleep.
