Dude, you had neither a crew teleporter nor a cloaking device. How did that even happen?
Apparently incredible amounts of luck.
Getting there wasn't easy and the fact I got to the flagship with no hull damage was incredible.
It's shit i'll never pull off again, that's for sure.

That's all there was to it :v:
I sent two people to burn, I think one suffocated, and the other went down with the ship.
after like 30 shots from that things basic laser.

Upgrade shields ASAP and always target weapons first.
Also, read the heck out of the FTL wikis:
I'm still not brave enough to go normal mode.
I remember when I first played, I was playing Normal to get really good at it early on.
Needless to say, 10 minutes later I kept it on easy.
My ships' edges looks really blocky. Is there any fix?
Before saying anything, yes, I know it is suppose to look like that, but what I am talking about here is the shading, not the borderlines.
[t]http://puu.sh/1NVNW[/t]
Also, my systems' icons are fucked up.
Tried swapTextures=1, didn't work.
Also, I noticed that some images in this thread have very clear, sharpness effects. How?
I managed to beat the flagship easily on easy difficulty with a zoltan ship
Is normal much harder than easy?
All i had to do is have 4 shields and fire bomb the living shit out of their shield room, then slicing and dicing with a single halberd beam.
There's nothing more satisfying than watching 4 crew members of the endgame boss panicking inside a shield generator room on fire.
I wish they would develop this game more; it's great...

Looks like there's some sort of really bad scaling going on. Try playing in a window if you haven't already.
We didn't do it due to everything going wrong at the very last minute.
Seriously, two boarders in the helm, a missile blew the med bay up and my gunman decided to miss every single shit except for two meaning i couldn't get the missile launcher.
Fuck you Arries, you got us ruined.
Apart from Arries, may the crew of the Red-Tail rest in peace after fighting (and failing) valiantly to protect our noble federation.
You got further with the stock Red-Tail than me in my totally decked-out version with:
Full reactor
Shields lvl 3
Engines lvl 6
MedBay lvl 2
O2 lvl 1
Teleporter lvl 3
Cloaking lvl 1
Drone Bay lvl 8 with Attack drone II and Defense Drone II.
Weapons Lvl 7 with
1 Burst laser II
1 Hull Laser 2 (I think...the one that fires to shots with 1-2 damage)
1 Heavy Laser I
1 Basic Laser 1
Also
Sensors lvl 3
Doors lvl 3
And a fucking Mantis boarding crew.
Of course I couldn't use all of it at the same time due to lack of max power, but mostly I just did everything wrong.
I lost my boarding crew in the 1st stage because I forgot about the Flagship's blast doors.
So I could attack his drone bay in stage 2 only with my lasers. Also, I didn't use the fucking defense drone. Lowering my shield level by 1 and reducing my engine power by 2 for the benefit of the defense drone would probably have saved me. IF I knew how to time my cloaks. Which I don't. I cloaked at all the wrong times in stage 2.. Which is also where I died.
Personally, I've never bothered with buying a drone system. Aside from defense drones, and maybe beam drones, I just don't see them as being all that useful against the flagship, and upgrading the system and buying drone parts all the time takes a lot of scrap. I always just saved up for other things (like shields) instead.
Protip for anyone who finds themselves in a nebula sector: Upgrade your O[sup]2[/sup], medbay, and piloting, in descending order of priority, to at least level 2 each. This will give you access to blue options that may prove very useful or even seemingly necessary in some cases.
No, seriously, though. If you're in a nebula sector, upgrade your O[sup]2[/sup] system yesterday, or else you might run into an event in which the slugs can turn it off. And then start shooting fire weapons at you. And you can't have that, now, can you?
Holy shit I just had the best run ever with the Rock Cruiser Type A.
I got 2 achievements, Defense Drones don't do anything or something like that, and then the one that caused me to choke on my coke, Ancestry.
I actually made it to the Crystal Hidden Worlds for the first time in my FTL play time.
We did lose a man on the way there though. He got fucked up by boarders and then suffocated which sucked.

I then proceeded to rain hell on everyone there, got the Crystal Cruiser, left, I then got super lucky and found a Burst Laser III, then plowed through the Last Stand and took down the Flagship.

This really was a triumph.
[editline]15th January 2013[/editline]
I think that's the first run I've had with the Rock Cruiser A.
A lot of runs I did before about a week or two ago I had a profile that had all the ships unlocked.
But then I realised part of the fun was working towards unlocking those.
I was overjoyed when I unlocked the Crystal Cruiser :v:
Dude, what kind of mods are you using? You've got an "Artemis X" weapon in those screenshots.
And that background is so bright that I can't even read the names of the unpowered weapons. :v:
I wouldn't call getting a Burst Laser III "super lucky", personally. It eats up four power and has a 19-second cooldown without anyone manning the system and without any Weapon Auto-Reloader augments (it's a little bit longer than 15 seconds with a gold-level weapons person). Unless you're tight on weapon slots, you're better off with two Burst Laser Mk. II's. I guess a Mk. III does sell for 55 scrap though, at least.
Also, you had two Crystal people and a Mantis. Why didn't you get a teleporter? Those two races complement each other amazingly for boarding.
Congrats on getting the Crystal cruiser, btw. In my opinion, it's one of the best ships in the game.
[editline]I DARE you to ninja this edit.[/editline]
Also, was that on Easy or Normal difficulty?
I have weaponanza and the better planets and backgrounds mod. Not sure what difference the Artemis X made considering it seemed to be exactly the same as the Artemis in all respects (2 damage) only it charged in like 9 seconds rather than 11.
I picked up the Crystal and Mantis men in Sector 7. The only available store was not selling a teleporter. Same goes for the Burst Laser Mark III. Got it in sector 7 (or maybe it was the crystal worlds i dont remember), there was no Burst Laser Mark II's anywhere.
And those other 2 weapons were an Artemis and a small bomb.
total games played: 42.
Victories: 0
I rip through everything until I get to the boss.
One time I have enough firepower but lack the defense.
Another time I have a huge ass defense but can't find any guns anywhere...like on this last run where I had a boarding crew of 4 mantis and could evade almost anything, but the only time i found anything better than a burst laser 1 was when I jumped into a sector, low on scrap and had a store right in front of me that sold a burst laser 3. Of course, the next two sectors in this shit map layout didn't have anything and I didn't make it back to the store before the rebels arrived.
On another playthrough every store has awesome weapons but I get shit luck with the ships I have to fight and end up having to waste all my scrap on repairs.
I'm starting to get tired of this game.
[editline]16th January 2013[/editline]
I might have made it this time if the fucking Zoltan shield hadn't fucking returned. Doesn't it say in the fucking description that it can only be recharged by the power surge from an FTL jump?
I mean, I don't care if AI cheats in games, it's just that I don't like to be told so by the game.
The best tip I can give you for this game is you MUST MUST MUST learn to micromanage. Know what's going on at all times. Make sure your crew members are all doing something or in the position to do something useful. Get them trained and do not lose the well trained ones to boarding parties/fires.
Also know what events will and won't screw you over and plan ahead with your scrap. If you're in a plasma storm, and the enemy only has missiles, you won't need your shields, etc. Visit every node in a sector if you can but avoid the rebels are they are a waste of time. Observe the enemy's weapon systems if you can before an attack.
The way I like to play (as a very general rule) is I usually like to get some form of attack power for the initial level 1 shields phase, then build on shields or engine power. Getting a Defence I drone early is so useful because it prevents missiles from doing damage most of the time. Cloak and Teleport aren't quite as important for me, but they are still very effective styles of play. Later on, more shields and engine power are needed for further on encounters and firepower to pierce tougher shields.
I'm pretty sure my micromanagement is not the problem. I basically use the pause button all the time. But I may be placing my priorities wrong. If I'd postponed upgrading my shields to level 3, I would have been able to afford that burst laser 3.
Also, in my experience almost every event can screw you over. For example, if you side with the Mantis fugitive against the Engi, there's a chance that the Mantis will STILL fuck up your ship.
That many losses can't be attributed to simple bad luck. There's gotta be something wrong with your playstyle.
What is the first thing you spend scrap on? What are the first upgrades for your ship that you purchase? What is the first thing you do when you run into an enemy ship (e.g. target X system, teleport boarders into Y room, etc.)? What kind of weapons do you endeavor to obtain? Do you regularly run out of fuel, missiles, etc.? Do you ever read the outcomes of an event, either in the data.dat file or on one of the wikis, before you make your choices? Have you ever power-leveled your crew members? How do you handle boarders? Do you board other ships? Do you often lose crew members in events?
"What is your playstyle?," basically.
Getting a Defence I drone early is so useful because it prevents missiles from doing damage most of the time.
To buy a drone control system, one upgrade for it, and a schematic for a DD Mk. I is 140 scrap (80 + 10 + 50), not counting any reactor upgrades you might have to buy to power the drone (two reactor upgrades is another 40 scrap at the very least). Unless you somehow manage to take at least 140 scrap worth of damage from missiles, somehow, that's just not worth it at all if you ask me. And even if you actually manage to take 140 scrap worth of damage from missiles alone, which I have no idea how the heck you could possibly do (since that's at least 35 hull), you're almost definitely doing something wrong. You're really better off just buying shield upgrades or a cloaking system.
[editline]Faster Than Editline Travel[/editline]
I didn't even count the cost of drone parts, which typically sell for 8 scrap apiece.
[editline]Faster Than Smell Travel[/editline]
You're right, guys. That was pretty rude. Thank you so much for pointing that out.
I really wish merchants would take drone parts
You get so fucking many of them but they rarely have a use unless the game would let you pilot a fucking drone

That particular event that you're referring to ("ALISON_MANTIS_CREW" in the data.dat file) is just mean. There is no 'safe' option, since there are only two options, both of which can lead to 5 points of hull damage. There aren't even any blue options, either. So if you have 5 points of hull or fewer remaining and you get that event, you're slightly screwed. (Note that picking the second option [ditch that Mantis for a reward] results in slightly less of a chance of receiving hull damage, since one out of three outcomes damage your hull rather than one out of two, as with the first option.)
Most events are somewhat nicer than that, giving you at least one choice that is guaranteed not to kill a crew member or damage your hull or whatever else, so that particular event is a rare case.

I always just ignore the fight, isn't that one of the options?
Fuck yes, finally beat the game with the Kestrel on Normal. I think the best weapon setup is Burst Laser II, Burst Laser I or II, Halberd Beam and Ion Bomb. Ion bomb the shield, laser the shit out of it and use the beam to take out the shield or go for the engines. Makes the Flagship p. easy.
[editline]16th January 2013[/editline]
I beat the game with this setup with the Zoltan ship and now the Kestrel.
