Jumped into a sector. "Holy crap, a weapon just floating in space"
Receive burst laser III, fuck shit up
[editline]16th September 2012[/editline]
Unloading burst laser III and II at the same time results in 8 laser bolts of shield-raping subsystem-destroying death. Maybe I could actually dent the big boss with this
Just bought a teleporter, how do I actually teleport people onto another ship?
Oh yea I just watched me and a pirate explode eachother's ships. We both died braveously.
Been playing for ages and haven't unlocked anything.
How does it work?

Put them onto the pad and press the little button above the system icon down the bottom left, then click on the enemy ship to teleport them to that room.

Look here to find out how to unlock ships; http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=779
Just sorta wondering because I love the concepts of roguelikes but wouldnt these make Skyrim a rougelike?
According to Barlin Interpretation 2.0 that I posted, Skyrim would score 5 out of 13 which is less than half and only 2 of those are high value factors.
So, no. Skyrim is not a roguelike.

When you complete certain secret objectives during one of your games, you unlock a ship. So just play normally and you should unlock some after a while or look up a guide.
Oh my gawd the second form of the rebel flagships has 10 drones...
Hopefully they iterate on this game.
There are a lot of things that could be expanded upon, like things you could buy that effect the crew, like PRESSURIZED GODDAMN SUITS.
and being able to design your own ship would be pretty cash too.
Do you get anything special if you de-crew the flagship?
I always have little to no issue with ships but the crew always destroy me from within.
I think the game is unreasonably hard sometimes, i know that it is supposed to be hard, but it often is simply unfair.

I hope they do too.
They did make a lot of money from the Kickstarter, a shit-ton more than they wanted / asked for.
I don't see why they couldn't or wouldn't keep adding to it.

I think it rides that line fairly nicely actually, it's hard to give weight to your accomplishments.

Skyrim fits eight by my count, three of which are "high-value." It fits the same number as FTL does, actually.
Then again, you know, Tetris fits a good few of those too. So take that as you will.

I sort of feel like this. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt right now and assuming it's because I'm not well acquainted with the game yet, but it really feels like a game that's actively attempting to make you fail.
Do you get anything special if you de-crew the flagship?
You get even more loot and a chance of getting one of their weapons and even [sp]a chance to unlock a special ship[/sp].
I hope they develop more to the game.
For example I would like to see crew members you can hire at stores have some pre-trained skills, so it would make sense of them even having a price equal to a laser beam
Wait, what happens if you de-crew a normal ship? Do you get more scrap/items?
Wait, what happens if you de-crew a normal ship? Do you get more scrap/items?
and weapons typically.
So far the Zoltan Cruiser is my favorite ship, the 5 hit shield is great and the laser kills anything early game in 1 - 3 hits.

also being able to sell drone parts or missiles.

Welcome to roguelikes.
Skyrim fits eight by my count, three of which are "high-value." It fits the same number as FTL does, actually.

High Value Factors
Random Environment Generation FTL (Random Solar Systems, Sectors and Events. Skyrim is completely static.)
Permafailure (including Permadeath) FTL (FTL has permadeath, Skyrim doesn't, since you can reload whenever you want.)
Turn Based Interaction Neither (both games are real time)
Single command set Neither (controls in both games are context dependant)
Free form Your advancement is not enrouted into a linear progression. Both.
Discovery mechanics Both
Middle Value Factors
Single player Skyrim
Plenty of content Both
Complex non-trivial world Both (arguably)
Low Value Factors
High ramped difficulty FTL (Skyrim sacrificed this by implement that dumbass level scaling system)
Monsters are players FTL (FTL's enemy ships obey the same rules as the player, most Skyrim monsters don't use the same Perks, Attributes and Gear as the player.)
Character-based display Neither
Hack and Slash Skyrim
That's 8 for FTL and 5 for Skyrim.
Also, I understand that this isn't supposed to be the defining test to see if a game is a roguelike or not but this is the best way to deal with discussions like this.
So after having played hours upon hours of this game, there is just one thing I hope for:
mod tools
It would allow for custom campaigns, ships, weapons, features, etc. At least I hope for some free content updates. I'll be more than glad to pay for some DLC farther down the road, but this game dearly needs more content. The randomization and difficulty are more than enough to keep me coming back, but it'd be wrong to say that this game has loads of content. Mod tools would be really sweet.
Is the game moddable at all? I'm interested in creating a Firefly/Serenity mod for it, I think it'd fit nicely.
Oops, posted at the same time as the above post

I really want to try it but I can't manage to unlock anything other than an Engi Cruiser. :(
Welcome to roguelikes.
Myeh, well-designed roguelikes are fair, not evil. NetHack doesn't try to kill you, it just doesn't try to help you, either.
(I'm ignoring the subtle implication that this is a roguelike by the way. :v: You know, even the developers don't call it a roguelike.)

No, but sometimes it fucking feels like it. And God help you if you play one of the variants that add in difficulty, like SLASH'EM.
How to deal with intruders:
Get all of your crew to run into medbay, open all the doors on the ship (double click open doors button) then seal off medbay. I killed like 3 mantises this way, shit was cash.
I have eight crew and no teleporter.
Fucking cramped ass spaceship.
[editline]16th September 2012[/editline]
AND FINALLY UNLOCKED THE ENGI SHIP.

It's even easier with the maxed out blast doors. Open every door and watch their little HP bars drain while laughing like a maniac.
