[TRAINABLE_WAR] and [TRAINABLE_HUNTING], respectively. [TRAINING] is for both.
So i downloaded DF on a school computer today, i accidentally got 5 people to download it when they got home. Probably because of my axedwarf's battle with a pack of kitten's. Needless to say, he lost when one latched on to his eye.
Adventure Mode: [t]http://static4.fjcdn.com/comments/SAVE+ME+FROM+THE+WEE+TURTLES+_28e07b9452c78369da250865b66ff111.png[/t] [editline]23rd January 2013[/editline] Except one of the wee turtles bites him and his head explodes
God damnit why is the Masterwork wiki down :( I need to know what certain things do
I was wondering why my forts are so boring compared to those you see online, then I realised it was because i was playing in a peaceful area. I'm ordering the miners to redirect the river straight into the main entryway while it's still frozen for winter. I plan to keep going until the water reaches the lowest point, then im going to try and colonise the small island of maximum fuck, with its eyeball grass.
Holy shit. It was intense. At about the time summer hit and the water began to flow in, my lowest diggers broke into a huge cavern, where they immediately got attacked by native-whatthefuckevers. I sent the tiny squad that was my military down to fight, and one of them had a baby on the way down the stairs. She dropped the baby, it joined in the fight and bit a things foot, then she picked it up and hit some boogers with it. Meanwhile I've cancelled all labours and the people reacted by throwing party after party in the dining hall. And when I say Party, i mean party. It lasted 5 months and I think 17 or so babies where born. This ate up the last of the food and booze, moods lowered thanks to the slow flooding and flies and miasma and apparently the soldier wielding a baby had become popular, because next thing you know, mass baby fights, tantrums and insanity. Then the forgotten beast showed up. It ended with the mayor, a farmer, a miner and a metalsmith in a 5X5 room just ahead of the flood, smoothing and carving their tale into the floor before they went down to their doom. Sadly, Non of them where any good at it, and so it will probably be assumed by adventurers in the future that this fort was destroyed by Dimple cups and poorly cut gems.
Wow talk about a dissapointment. For years I had been training this supersoldier, badass as hell master race dwarf as my militia commander. I clad him in the best armour we had to offer, and gave him the best weapon I could make. After years of beating prisoners into submission with a wooden training sword (this is hella effective to live out a prisoner longer, and get more fighting xp) He finally reached legendary levels with fighting, shield user, swordsdwarf, armor user and dodging. Then a siege came, right after the merchants arrived. I figured my highly-skilled dwarfs could hold the bridge untill the merchants were in, since they had superior equipment and skills. The first thing that happens is my legendary commander gets whacked in the face by a ordinary goblin maceman, with a copper mace instantly killing him, bypassing the masterwork helmet completely. Fuck you too combat system.

So I checked on my legendary engraver after I got spammed about masterwork engravings: And there are 14 more like this. 14 engravings devoted to the elf who fell off the waterfall, all of them making plaintive gestures and or flipping people off. This engraver will get a golden statue, and this hall will be excellent for diplomacy with the elves.
My favourite fortress up to date: Emalmothram, "Sensitivecursed". [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/hOQQqzP.png[/img_thumb][img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/SIX5ooy.png[/img_thumb] First level and second level. I'm not sure what to do with my efficient reservoir (it's hasn't had to be refilled in years).
My vampire adventure ended. I was having fun training my swimming when I encountered a sturgeon. It tore my leg off and killed me. Sturgeons are dicks.

Can someone teach me this game? Tutorials haven't really helped me :c
I haven't even had a caravan yet and I've already got an undead siege. Do I need to forbid and dump all the fish and meat so they don't come back to life, or is sealing everything off and keeping it underground good enough? The necromancer shouldn't be able to do much if he can't see them, right?

Only remains and corpses are reanimated, edible meat isn't. undead shells can be a bitch to deal with.
Nice fort, but is are the pics stretched weird or do you badly need a new tileset?
It's ASCII with the Warm+ color scheme. It looks normal to me, that's how my DF has always looked like and I guess I'm used to it.
God damnit why is the Masterwork wiki down :( I need to know what certain things do
There's an actual Masterwork wiki? I've just been using the manual it comes with.
So the undead siege isn't letting up, I've only got 20 dwarfs and prospector tells me there's no iron ore. On the plus side, there's a fuckload of silver not too far down. I can't see the Necromancer anywhere, think it'd be a decent idea to set up enough cage traps and lure the zombies in? Or do undead sieges go away after a while anyway?
Necromancer sieges last the longest of any siege in the game, potentially over a year. Necromancers will sneak around the map, hidden from view and from your unit list, until you discover them. With only 20 dwarves you should be relatively safe from starvation/dehydration if your farms are set and ready. Your best bet will probably be to wait for it to let up, unless you're willing to risk everything by setting up a giant mass of cage traps.
Oh christ. I've reached the caverns, and two naked mole dogs have emerged. They're not a big deal, my miners hacked their legs off, no problem. But they didn't kill them, so these poor, pathetic creatures have crawled upstairs and into the great hall. They're just lying there, bleeding everywhere. Nobody will kill them, and it's making everyone sad. All the carvings relate to the hacking off of the limbs. Another has a dwarf standing over a Naked Mole dog looking sad. Fucking Empathetic dwarfs.
military will kill whatever they're set to, even the bloody, sad mole dogs. at least i think they would
oh the humanity quick, close the draw bridges!
So I decided to play df for the first time. Only took me 20 minutes to trap my only miner and for him to starve to death. Is there any way to make a new one or do i have to abandon my fortress?

Had just enough cages for them and the three unwanted guests. Gotta make a bigger safety margin next time.
If you manage to cage the necromancers, you can use them to train your military. It works especially well for marksdwarves.
Haven't found him yet and the siege officially ended, he probably just ran away once all his zombies were captured. I even had a single muscle shell waiting nearby in case he sneaked inside and couldn't resist. Enough of that though, just gotta hold out a few more months for the caravan so I can get some iron, forge steel and start equipping a proper military.
