Cool, new thread... Still can't get into this game though D= And damn have I tried. I've read walkthroughs, watched videos, and installed 'texture packs' How do you people do it? I want to know!
what I did was grab the lazy newb pack, and watch a tutorial, I would mimic what he did in the video. That's pretty much it, after watching about 4 episodes, I figured out how almost all the menus work, and really basic things like setting up farm, well, brewery etc. When I was comfortable with how things work, I grabbed Masterworks, and just jumped into it and started building my fort how I wanted. While doing this I grabbed another tutorial vid from a different person to get a different perspective while starting out. What happened was I learned certain things that helped me even more, and I ended up developing some of my own techniques. Once you get the basics down, and you want to start using traps, forging and other things, I use the wiki, it's a lot easier than looking into a tut vid. And of course if there's any questions you can always ask in this thread, as people here are very helpful.

I started trying it out yesterday and it's a pretty different experience to Vanilla. I mean that's not to say it'll ruin your DF experience or anything, I just think it's easier to learn to walk before you learn to run.
Will a creature receive any damage from falling on a moving gear assembly?
a masterpiece
a masterpiece
The name is a bit too familiar for my tastes.
Will a creature receive any damage from falling on a moving gear assembly?
yes, instadeath [editline]8th January 2013[/editline] atleast i recall it used to be
oh dear so I just had a necromancer walk up and reanimate all the fish. they jumped around outside by the hundreds; the ones inside were like self-guided fish slapping missiles so I used my magma reserves to flood the surface with magma (thanks orkel) it worked; everything is dead :v:
None of my attempts to make a well that doesn't freeze over have worked, so I decided to dig straight down to the cavern and dump my miner into the water. They were carrying a baby which got a little bruised, but overall they were fine and can swim. Now they are apparently stuck there, unable to swim a few metres to the shore. Any way I can save them from a pointless death?
Will a creature receive any damage from falling on a moving gear assembly?
Not only do they die instantly, I'm pretty certain they gib spectacularly.
Not only do they die instantly, I'm pretty certain they gib spectacularly.
Looks like execution has become much more interesting.
My favourite method is to place a Dwarf over a spike trap then set a loved one to operate the lever repeatedly. Dwarves will activate it so fast that the spikes will actually dismember the victim.
Am I the only one who has serious beast-man issues? They're not even slightly hard to get rid of,but it gets annoying calling the milita to kill another 5 Kea (Wo)men. [editline]8th January 2013[/editline] Not to mention the blood EVERYWHERE.
Anyone wanna make a banner like the other ones in the OP with the title "Why We Play"?

clean all is very useful so you don't see arrows lodged in the ground and blood spatter littering the battlefield.
clean all is very useful so you don't see arrows lodged in the ground and blood spatter littering the battlefield.
thats part of the experience the best fortresses are the ones with the largest fields of death
If the soil outside your front gate isn't at least 30% gore, blood, or offal, than you aren't doing it right.
You guys sound like you are having some wacky adventures what with the reincarnate fish and the poetically beautiful coal. But the thing is, I just started playing like ten minutes ago and.... I, I, uhhh... [sub]I don't get it....[/sub] I'll tell you about my catastrophies next week when I have a somewhat okay understanding of this.
Jezus christ I am not even done with the rooms for my previous wave of 30 dwarves and now another 13 arrive, making the total amount of dwarves 60. This is going way too fast for me :v:. I don't even yet have made a blacksmith.

Trust me, after not too long, your shit will be fucked by something amazing.
You just haven't gone far enough into it yet. Trust me, after not too long, your shit will be fucked by something amazing.
The massive tantrum spiral that brought me from 120 dwarves down to 3 is still my favorite fortress end.
Wow I'm bad at making cisterns. :( Actually, it was never meant to be a cistern! Yeah! That's right! It's a... flooding mechanism! For my fort! Yeah! If those fucking [del]commies[/del] goblins ever get in I can flood the entire place!
It seems I got a vampire in my fort. A dwarven child has been found dead in someone's bedroom.
OKAY. Here's my plan for a fortress- Is this an alright setup for my first embarkment? [editline]they just won't stop[/editline] I dropped the ducks and decided on two cats. [editline]help me plz[/editline] That was two cats too many. [editline]dear lord[/editline] They won't stop breeding [editline]geezus, ever heard of spaying your pets?[/editline] CATS. SERIOUSLY. STOP FUCKING YOUR COUSINS, I DON'T NEED ANY MORE KITTENS

At least in the newer DF versions you can choose the gender of the animals you bring. In older versions I'd bring two cats and immediately see if there was a female one and put it in a cage. :v:
I never have problems with catsplosions.

My issue is now that the one bit of water below where I channelled... Why does this happen?
These dwarves work as hard as Australian public services. Get your asses in gear already.
