So I was just fighting a vampire. First thing that happens is he stabs my leg so hard that it shatters and I lose my ability to stand. I still ultimately won the fight, but it's bittersweet since my adventurer can no longer walk. Then I go to sleep and when I wake up the leg is perfectly fine. I don't think that's supposed to happen. [editline]27th January 2013[/editline] I'll just take it as a sign from Armok, I suppose.
Yer a vampire harry.
bummer. That woulda been hella fun.
Why not try it with a vampire? They don't need any food nor drinks to survive. And they usually have incredible combat stats. I had a naked vampire mayor beat up a whole mounted siege.
I thoroughly regret making so many nest boxes and making it so the dwarves left the eggs in them. There's a good ~250 poults in there. My dwarves can't cage them fast enough.
Set up a dozen butcher's & tanners' shops and kitchens Allow every dwarf to butcher animals (Dwarf Therapist helps with this) Set almost all of the turkeys to be slaughtered Cook all the turkey meat, their hides will be tanned automatically Boom, infinite turkey leather clothing and food. You're sitting on a goldmine.
bummer. That woulda been hella fun.
Use the vampires like above post said, and if you can, make them swim constnantly. This boosts their strengths directly while danger rooms only boost combat skills. This way you'll have vampires who can lift elephants and cut dragons in half without breaking a sweat.
So, I tried to make soil by destroying a few holes and make mud. It went a bit too much, and it appeared that my two miners I ordered to mine drowned. So I decided to wall off the area before the water got there. It worked. I then got really bored and impatient and also decided to wall in all of my dwarves in the fortress and flood the place, but when I did, the supposed "drowned" miner dwarves appeared from the water, dug a hole, and just disappeared again. When I did, all the dwarves that was left outside the fortress decided to jump down from above inside the water to enter the place. What the fuck, Dwarf Fortress? If you make them on soil/sand floor no water is necessary. Also, did the game say that your dwrves drowned, or did they just disappear under the water? It could be that they were in shallow water and then walked up the pond so they were above your view.

can you feed vampires without killing anyone?
Yeah I thought vampires randomly went around killing people.
The only way to actually continue letting them feed without killing dwarves is luck. Sometimes they're just pale, sometimes they die.
Do they not feed off animals?
haha I removed one of two trade depots i had while a trading caravan had unpacked their goods and the guys just left the stuff there. First sign was when I suddenly had a bunch of useless cages of random animals in my stocks.
Make a screening section of your fort before they enter. The usefull ones go into the fort, the useless ones go into the vampire-section.
So remember my first fort, the one that was blood? It was cool so i attempted to reclaim it. After building a wall around certain chambers to prevent the flow of blood i got the fortress back. After a while some people started dying and then my food stocks stopped going down. After doing a bit of research it turns out the dwarf that originally bled in the river was a vampire. A river of which over the past years has spread to the sea. This must be a glitch, every water source in this world is now vampire blood.

Trying out Masterwork but the graphics in it are utterly fucked. How it should look like [thumb]http://horobox.reager.org/u/Orkel_1359456302.png[/thumb] How Masterwork looks like. [thumb]http://horobox.reager.org/u/Orkel_1359489010.png[/thumb] The init settings are identical. The fuck is going on?

I'm guessing a glass industry for a temperature forest where there's nothing but sandy loam?

Helps me survive the Winter and not worry about making anything to sell until year 2. [editline]28th January 2013[/editline]
Do they not feed off animals?
No. Vampires only drink your dwarves' blood.
Would probably work well. I always strive for obsidian exports, but thats just because I have a dwarven fetish for obsidian.
Started my first fortress yesterday and other than a brief booze shortage things have been running surprisingly well. The only thing I'm really having trouble with is strange moods, the first one I got had a miner claim the masonry and start sketching "quarry" and stacked cloth which I had no idea how to get him and he eventually went crazy, ripped all his clothes of and starved to death. Now I have a woodcutter sketching skeletons and have no idea where to get the materials from.

As for stacked cloth, thats... well... cloth. quarrys will be either rocks, blocks, or bars of something.
The miner wanted stone and cloth, the woodcutter wants bones. Butcher some animals to get bones. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Strange_mood

Also have a few animal skeletons lying around from earlier when they starved because I forgot to make a pasture, apparently I cant give those to the woodcutter so I butchered some goats.
I don't get it. Every single time I embark all the mountain walls are made out of clay or some other weird sand. I even search for areas with flux stone.
Managed to fix the problem. Fortress Ringingtrumpet, time for glory.
