YOU GLORIOUS MAN, you have fixed my drinking problem, thank you oh thank you, i've already lost two forts to that fucking problem, amazing!
It didn't fix my drinking problem, if anything it made it worse.
Another day, another adventure.
Another duck tearing my throat out.

I've got it set up so i've got two, as shadyface said, one food and one crafted pots and barrels: the food stockpile is set to take from the crafted and give to my stills and the crafted stockpile is set to give to my food stockpile and my stills, hope that helps somehow? :v
I'm interested in trying this game out but it seems complicated, how exactly is this played?
All of my guys are sitting around doing nothing...
So I have a militia set up, but none of the people in it are classified as macedwarf, marksdwarf, etc?

Read http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Quickstart_guide .
It really helps, and teches you most of the basics
I hate the look of sand floors in my fort, how would I go about making it stone or something
b-C-f
b-C-f
I dunno why but i assumed floors had to be built on open space. Is this not the case?
Only There are a LOT of mushrooms growing in my hospital.
EDIT:
Just tried to colonise a haunted location. It rained goblin blood for a while then harpies came and ate everyone.
Can anyone suggest the fastest way to flood and drain an room for farming? I think the fact that I left everyone outside while I mined pipes and build floodgates for overly complex irrigation systems is why they ended up dead and covered in thee kinds of blood.
Nope. They can be built anywhere.
[editline]1st February 2013[/editline]
Well except on trees.
if he has one and the corpses are outside, he has to make sure that corpse gathering from outside is enabled too, or else the dwarfs will just ignore the corpses that are outside.
I keep my pile outside, can I set them to have them grab what's outside or does it have to be an indoor pile?

I was attempting to make a crappy joke in which a "drinking problem" refers to alcoholism. :v:

x = Up/Down staircase
X = Floodgate
█ = Door (Locked when chambers are being flooded!)
. = Open air (A hole to let water flow down)
Basically, the chamber is filled with shallow water which creates mud, and this water then falls into the below chamber where it will flood that one as well. If you have a brook or a river, you can let the water flow and fill the chambers, closing the floodgates once all chambers have mud on them. If you have a reservoir, make sure that it is big enough to fill your chambers.
To prevent water from creating a pool to the final chamber, (Water only evaporates when it is 1/7) create a hole (Or an Up/Down Staricase) which reaches the first cavern, so you can flush out any excess water.
If you have reached a cavern, underground trees and mushrooms will grow on mud over time, meaning that you can even use this trick to create trees in case you don't have an overground forest.
The chambers can be filled with farm plots once they are covered in mud.
Asking again.
I have a militia set up. With armor and weapons equipped for everyone. Yet noone shows up as a macedwarf, axedwarf, etc.
Assistance please.

They don't have levels in those skills. They will be "recruits" or "peasants" until they level with whatever wep they've been assigned.

You need to activate them so they're on duty. See this page for more info.
Awesome farm
Orrrrr you could do what I do and find surface ponds, dig underground next to them, sizing the chamber to be about the size needed to get a 2/7 from everything, and then punch a hole in the wall. Drain pond, when it gets low enough to build, build a wall in the hole. BUhbam.
Go to (o)rders and let your dwarves haul corpses from the outsides
The stockpile's location is irrelevant for what is being hauled, you have to have outside corpse hauling set to on in order to have animals that have died outside (that were not killed by your hunter or whatever) to be brought to a stockpile.

So is military still broken to the point that I have to give them inactive months when we're training otherwise they'll starve to death like before?
So is military still broken to the point that I have to give them inactive months when we're training otherwise they'll starve to death like before?
I tried it and it worked fine for me, so that's a no.
Military works pretty nicely I must say, though I have nothing to compare it against.
So is military still broken to the point that I have to give them inactive months when we're training otherwise they'll starve to death like before?
Isn't it like you need to schedule your military so there's 7 or 8 required to be active instead of 10, so the active dwarves can take leave to eat and drink and sleep?
Oh my fucking god my dwarfs keep shagging and now there's 14 babies fuckin drinking all of my booze and shitting up my fort.
5/7 of my militiamen are unconscience for some odd reason. 3 war dogs are injured too.
Funny thing is, no combat had occured.
Oh my fucking god my dwarfs keep shagging and now there's 14 babies fuckin drinking all of my booze and shitting up my fort.
You hit the inevitable baby boom. AKA prepare the floodgates, because you're about to get swamped.
Of the ~200 people in my fort, well over half of them are babies or children. I've got two whole pages of the citizens list dedicated to them!
Toady posted a new Future of the Fortress post. Apparently half-elves are going to be possible eventually.
Also, his plans for the next updates:
Inns and taverns (both modes), dwarf mode start scenarios and hill/deep dwarves (these'll be necessary before we do any dwarf mode army stuff), criminal justice system stuff... but I'm really not sure. And during the bugfix releases, there might be more focused additions as well.
I'm really looking forward to running an inn/tavern in dwarf mode.
Why don't you just lock him in a nice room and train him with weapons normally? That way you can keep him until he dies fighting.
also make his prison have a feeding chute and give him prisoners to feast upon.

Remember, Dwarves...
Say NO to hippies!
Only you can prevent halflings!
Holy crap, I just found out why I suddenly have a peasant with a proficiency for wrestling. Turns out at some point he was attacked by a troll which spent the better part of two days trying to choke him out while he gently punched it. The the feeble punching snowballed, he levelled and promptly punched its arm off.
I'm investing in fraps so I can capture moments like these.
I'm investing in fraps so I can capture moments like these.
Not 100% sure, as I really don't have the rig to record anything, let alone the incentive (or even a working mic atm) but most people recommend Dxtory over Fraps thesedays. Probably want to ask an expert though. I believe Dxtory is cheaper, too.
I can guarantee Dxtory is x1000 better than Fraps.
Way better performance from the get-go and its extremely modular.
As for DF you need a screen capture program, I'm pretty sure its all software rendered. So Dxtory or Fraps wouldn't do anything.
Ninja'd.
My fort reached FPS death just as the first migrants arrived.
