They don't go instantly insane, but they get a massive blow to their happiness. Same as if you destroyed a legendary engraving.
You should make sure that your smith is as comfortable as possible, get him to a steamroom or something similar.
Actually, masterwork items and engravings have a diminishing returns. If a dwarf makes 5 masterwork items and one of them gets stolen/destroyed, he gets a massive bad thought. If he made 500, he gets a much much smaller bad thought. At least that's how it worked the last time I read the wiki.
After a couple dozen fallen fort's i finally have one that's lasted over a year with near enough every single dwarf ecstatic, not so much money but at least i have productive dwarfs.
I really want to start playing this game, but it looks crazy to me. Would buying the book in the OP be the best way to learn? How did you guys learn?

The wiki and being smart with video games

Everything in the book can be found on the wiki. Watching a video tutorial would be a good way to become acquainted. Take notes if you feel it necessary, then just check the wiki for anything more specific to your personal wants and needs. Also, the Lazy Newb Pack is a must have.

Everything everyone else said plus this thread
Really, we can help any problem
Plus new DF players are always welcome

I read the quickstart guide on the wiki, did it a few times mostly by the letter, and then started adding in my own variations. I keep the entrance they do mostly the same, for example, but I design the lower levels a fair bit differently and don't stack up/down stairs anymore.
I've found my forts to be too efficient. I need to branch out and build something completely inefficient and at best, half functional.

Make an obsidian forge and then craft exclusively with it.
You'll find your efficiency rating plummeting faster than refuse down a volcano.
And if you can do it efficiently, tell me how you did it.

I started out by watching this video, although I skipped through some parts (it's 2.5 hours long). Then after I was done, I tried to duplicate what he did step by step for my first fortress.
Once I had the overall process figured out, I started experimenting where to go from there by looking stuff up on wiki whenever I saw something in-game that I knew nothing about. It helped that I had already played some roguelikes before (like dungeon crawl stone soup), and that I can generally figure out most games without any instructions.
basically:
"What's this tetrahedrite thing I just mined?"
"Oh, the wiki says it's a combination of a copper/silver ore that can be used to make billon"
"My bedrooms for my dwarves look like shit, what can I do about that?"
"Oh cool the wiki has a helpful page on that"
etc
Yeah, it helps to post in the thread a lot and to have a friend that plays DF available on instant messenger.
Also be prepared for the fact that you WILL die. There's no avoiding it, the question is whether or not you'll learn from your mistake and try again. Ultimately that's the most effective way to learn Dwarf Fortress.

I'll work on it.
Is there a way to pave over clay and sand like you can with the "smooth stone" designation? I hate imagining my dwarves walking over squishy clay while working :c

b-C-f for floors.
Or, build paved roads with I think b-o or something.
9/10 of my fortress deaths are me abandoning them because of FPS death.

Sounds like you need to embark to somewhere more fun.
I got a quest to kill a hill giant, found a steel battle-axe at his horde, then this happened.
[img_thumb]http://puu.sh/1XKoP[/img_thumb]
He was made of water, so i drank him after i killed him.

Errrrr... Sorta

Oh wow, started reading the wiki and playing around a bit, it's not as crazy hard as it looks at first, woot!

the rumor of DF being hard to play is silly
it's hard to master

Yeah, the hardest part about the game right now is the interface. Once you get past that, the learning curve really isnt that steep

And dealing with literal hell but, y'know, 's a cakewalk.
Compared to paradox grand strategy games for me dwarf fortress was a walk in the park.
Are there any stones more valuable than others?
I've said it before, but I really miss the old embark screens with more detailed layers.
Are there any stones more valuable than others?
Most regular stones are worth 3 dorfbucks
Flux such as marble are worth 6 dorfbucks
I believe Obsidian is 6 dorfbucks too, despite not being flux
Metal ores vary from 3 to 50 or so IIRC. I might be wrong though, the cheapest ores might be 6.
Of note is the fact that bituminous coal costs 3 dorfbucks, so it's really easy to buy a load of it with embark points at the start, if your parent civ has it.
Basically rooms in metal ore or flux are worth more, especially after being engraved.

If you've got a broker, just inspect a chunk of rock and I'm 90% sure it should tell you what it's worth.

Use DF hack's prospect feature. Not really cheating to see what types of rock / ore are in the area.
A real dwarf digs to see what kind of ore is in the area
A real dwarf digs to see what kind of ore is in the area
And embarks 50 times to find a site with coal, flux and an iron ore, in addition to a few bits of other ore types? Not to mention the relief and altitude, combined with ample stone and soil layers for plans, and clay or sand if you want it.
It get pretty tedious after the 10th embark. I'd rather know that I've got a sedimentary layer and will have iron somewhere on the map than embark, spend a year and realise it's a terrible fort area. Cheating would be using reveal, prospect is fine.
A real dwarf lives with whatever he gets, instead of abandoning and finding a new spot just because his isn't perfect.
A TRUE dwarf doesn't just make do, a true dwarf weaponises whatever he can't otherwise use.

True dorf gets lead 100% of the time :v:
