in related news i'm trying to stop the computer eating flow of lava by collapsing a cavern on it whilst a Jabberer tears the ever loving fuck out of my population upstairs. It's going well! EDIT: Nevermind i got ambushed by goblins too, i was about to reel the drawbridge in and hold my knob in the relative (yeah) safety of my fort when i realised that i hadn't actually hooked it up, oops. Now there's spears on one end and lava on the other!
Fun.
Compare for example the ramps next to the river in each image, you'll see how much smoother mine look.
It's just the default square ascii Pretty unsightly, though I will admit to having played with it a lot I usually use cooz now
So I've built a mass pitting floor above some moving mechanisms, hoping that the mechanisms would dice up any creature dropped through it. Tests on kittens show them falling through the mechanisms easily. DO the moving mechanisms need to be on solid ground to dice things up?
So I managed to successfully hold of my first two sieges (both with 50+ invaders) using nothing but my long bridge smashing hallway of death (actually lost a hammer dwarf to it on accident). I do have a question though, whenever i try to build a danger room, even if i have only 1 wooden spear in the trap and all of the dwarfs in full iron gear, they still manage to get themselves impaled rather quickly. Am I doing something wrong?
I wish there was some way to pick up dwarves and hoist them upwards so I could make something like the Wahrk Gallows from Riven
So I made a lava moat and then a water moat in front of the entrance to my fort, and along the sides I made little firing ports for my marksdwarves. I never felt so safe in my DF life. Until I tried to raise the bridge when the enemy warlocks were near the entrance and realised I forgot to link it to the lever I had made. And just as the warlocks engaged my under-equiped militia not 1, not 2 but 5 rockwraiths spawned as I mined to create a magma reservoir for my forges. This is gonna be a FUN fort.
I can't play with any tileset but the default 800x600 ascii one Playing with a non-square tileset is weird because I always end up with long hallway rooms unless I'm consciously counting out tiles to make sure it's square
I can't play with any tileset but the default 800x600 ascii one Playing with a non-square tileset is weird because I always end up with long hallway rooms unless I'm consciously counting out tiles to make sure it's square
It might blow your mind to know that the 800x600 tileset is actually a rectangular 5:6
So I have a small army of giant birds (Keas, ravens, and sparrows to be exact) How will they fare against goblin invaders?
It might blow your mind to know that the 800x600 tileset is actually a rectangular 5:6
Why exactly would that blow my mind?
Why exactly would that blow my mind?
Cause it's not square?
I was saying that playing with a non-square tileset is weird, I know that the 800x600 tileset isn't square and was complaining about that fact
I was saying that playing with a non-square tileset is weird, I know that the 800x600 tileset isn't square and was complaining about that fact
Ooooh. I misunderstood.
It is really easy to defend from invaders once you get traps or walls and drawbridges
What the fuck is this elf shit
What the fuck is this elf shit
If the traps threw wooden swords and trade sanctions at invaders, it'd be elven. but dwarven traps are a bit more... noticable. Spiky balls, saw blades, stones falling from the roof, and my favorite... cage traps! Cage traps to feed to the training pits...
Let's see the elves try to catch a dragon in a wooden cage!!
Let's see the elves try to catch a dragon in a wooden cage!!
Considering that they can bring you elephants, that's hardly a challenge.
TIL that water has pressure and equalizes over bends. As a consequence of this my fancy pool room and all associated rooms are now a fancy aquarium with a few "dwarfish" swimming in blood-water. Fortunately I was able to wall off my main staircase before the rest of my base also turned into one. [editline]11th February 2013[/editline] Speaking of which, is there a safe way to dig into a body of water? From the side or bottom works for me.

Is there a mod that allows you to check on various stocks without having to scroll using the up/down keys? Wish I could use a mouse in this game
Can anyone suggest a way of clearing the floor of goblin blood? Only it keeps raining and there's blood everywhere. It's not really having much of an effect, but it is unsightly.

[editline]11th February 2013[/editline] Magma has great antibacterial properties.

I got preoccupied BUT Iceterror lives on (still) So far it's been nothing interesting. Everything is made of steel there's so much of it to be mined. Urist McToothchucker is also now a really good marksman. He prefers to use people's teeth. It's actually a recurring thing. Also, we caught another whale. So much food.

Note for desired feature... track mounted object grabbing claw to allow for the semi-automated hoisting of objects, carts, dwarves, or other things over pits or gaps...
Note for desired feature... track mounted object grabbing claw to allow for the semi-automated hoisting of objects, carts, dwarves, or other things over pits or gaps...
Dwarven cranes machine! Drops your prizes into arenas, caves, magma, etc...
When the mechanics overhaul happens, that'll probably be possible. Along with huge moving fortress parts, too. Really can't wait for that and the liquids thing, too.
This just gave me to create a moving fortress Literally move the mountains Is that even possible?
This just gave me to create a moving fortress Literally move the mountains Is that even possible?
Unless it's dropping the mountain straight down, not yet.
