Gobbos can only assault if they have access to your area.
Best to check with the tab menu before embarking, lest one end up doomed to peace.
In some worlds, dwarves can't craft high boots. Dunno why.
It's civilization-specific
So you never know if you're getting high boots or not unless you checked all the dwarven civilizations or know which one to pick
There's a new DF Talk.

Dwarf Fortress Talk #20 (posted February 13, 2013): Download (1:12:23, 39.9 MB), music by Ollieh
In this episode, Rainseeker, Capntastic and Toady One discuss the continuing development of Dwarf Fortress (at least up until succession which I was working on during the time of the recording). Threetoe and Toady answer a small fraction of your questions, which appeared in great numbers.
Rainseeker has started up Measures of Joy, a gluten free bakery. Enjoy his birds during the episode!

Can anyone suggest a way to all but my legendary engraver from working on certain designations? I like to include a "Gallery of regret" that charts noteworthy moments in my forts, and it's kind of annoying when some novice interrupts the masterful art with a picture of socks and rough gems.

Are you saying an engraving of socks and rough gems ISN'T masterful art?

You should be able to designate the tiles you want engraved as a burrow and then assign only the legendary engraver to that burrow.

Not at all. It's just less interesting than "The harpy is striking an aggressive pose. The Dwarf is striking an aggressive pose. It relates to the mortal wounding of urist dumbshit by the harpy."
I dunno, having a crude engraving of some socks flanked by two masterfully crafted stories seems pretty fitting in "The Gallery of Regret"
By the way does anyone know how to fix a bug when parts of text sometimes aren't rendered, it happens on mostly all screens but mainly on the military screen, for example, under the equipment submenu it sometimes misses out whole names of equipment presets, any help with this would be great cause it's really getting on my tits.

Use dwarf therapist to remove the labor from every engraver except your legendary one? Just remember to turn it back on after he's done your high value room.

Do you use Truetext? It comes with the newb pack, and f12 toggles it off and on.

Nah. I still want to crap ones to deal with smoothing the stone.
Then I guess you can use a burrow to keep the wall smoothing team in the smoothing area (all burrows I make I also let them into the main food and drink stockpiles and the bedrooms)
I keep getting killed by undead whales in my sleep when i sleep next to the ocean to avoid boogymen, this is VERY silly.
So i slept on a mountain instead this time and I woke up surrounded by kobolds. Somehow they didn't see me and i managed to sneak away.

rip fortress I don't know how to military or defend

So i finally made it to the shrine that this titan i'm suppose to be killing resides. It's in an evil desert and there are undead dwarfs and humans everywhere. The only way i can actually kill them is to chop them into their basic body parts and kill each of those when they reanimate. So i'm going around crushing hands and sections of arms and tongues and shit, new full bodies keep coming out of the surrounding landscape and trying to murder me and i have to cut them up too. All i wanted was to kill another titan and this has to happen.

Seriously, what kind of bullshit is this.
Fuck sponges.
My current surroundings:

Ahahaahahahaah this fucking game.
Found the Titan!

Annnnd he got murdered by a fuckload of dead stuff. OH GOD HE CAME BACK.
You punched is nose off.
I studied (Failed) a level biology, so I know that isn't how noses work.
Also, is there any way to automatically dump or stockpile clothing that's too fucked to wear?
If they've got a refuse stockpile and better clothes to wear, they should do it automatically, at least they did for me.
Buy some cloth bins from the next caravan and start churning out some shirts, pants and socks.
I believe i wiped out the zombies, the fight took 14 or so in game hours, like 2 hours or so irl.

I would have kept fighting pieces of the bodies that kept reanimating, but i ran out of food an water.

I think i need a toothpick.

That is why you failed, you were wrong, that IS how noses work.

Hey, I failed biology for two reasons and two reasons only:
1: The teacher was so old she had a habit of passing out in lessons.
2: I was partnered with chick with massive tits. Which is distracting.
3: Noses are attached to the face in such a way that punching one off would require the fist in question to be moving at several times the speed of light.
4: I also failed math.

You would make a fine dwarven engineer/doctor.

How do get wood in deserty type places?
Caravans would be a good source.
Well only source i know of at least.
How do get wood in deserty type places?
Cacti, as well as the caverns.
[editline]14th February 2013[/editline]
Also caravans, yes.
Bad things keep happening.

Why did i think this would be easy.
Or growing fungiwood spores. That's damned expensive though.
Caravans would be a good source.

Caravans bring such a ridiculous amount of wood (Even humans/elves, not just dwarves) you don't even need to cut down trees past the first year, unless you're making an aboveground wooden fortress or something.
I see why everyone hates aquifers now, i just had my legendary miners dig into an aquifer, drowning all of the people on my staircase, fuck :(

they aren't THAT hard to deal with, just irritating. You have to collapse a tube down through them so you can go past it, annoying but it works. The advantages of having a huge supply of water underground outweigh the disadvantages, imo. I use masterwork so I can just use a tear of Armok, but otherwise I would use an aquifer to make a nice safe fishing/drinking pond.
