My defense plan to to have a name so fucking cool that goblins and elves will be too scared to invade.

And then they do invade, and give the siege a shitty name just to insult you.

Wow everything was doing so well and suddenly a plague hits the fort that makes dwarves stronger and beserk.
The only logical solution to get the brawl in the dining hall under control was sending in the military.
Now the soldiers slaughtered eachother and there are two dwarfs clad in full steel rampaging through the fortress. Good thinking me.
I'm not good with forts or things, but this is my first time playing with 2012 DF. Here's my measly fort of 100:

So far I have two 'interesting' dorfs:
'Stumpy', a carpenter who lost both his feet but went back to work unphased, and 'Bob Ross', a legendary engraver that engraves one wall a second and spam my screen with notes about him engraving a masterpiece. He's also produced the fort's only artifact.

Apparently one goblin held back an attack on a goblin fortress and killed 994 dwarfs. Never seen anything like this before

What the crist. He may have been a vampire i guess? Or some sort of demon? Or would it say
that goblin was probably some hunter who became legendary through the course of world gen by killing a million forest critters offscreen and then also became vampire.
Apparantly a 2-seasons old baby has developed a cult and is causing dwarfs to beserk throughout the fortress, after a plague that killed off 60 dwarfs.
Time for some execution chamber justice. Too bad the mother will have to die too.

He negotiated with them until they agreed to die.
Dammit half of my dinning hall is filled with red sand.
Why wont the magma forge let me make any Steel bars even tough i have everything required.
Why wont the magma forge let me make any Steel bars even tough i have everything required.
With Magma Forges, while the basic fuel requirement is covered by the fact that its heated by melted dwarves and liquid contingency-plan, you do still require coal or similar to produce steel. The requirements for it though are just 1 unit of fuel instead of 2.
But i have produced so much coke its not even funny.

Well theres your problem, your dwarves are drug addicts.

Calling it, tantrum spiral caused by serial killer raccoon.
Happened to me once. Jesus fuck that thing was just brutal.
I accidentally fed on a child when I was trying to drink water from my waterskin..
A "Giant Roach" just murdered about 15 of my dwarves and ran out of my fortress like a bat out of hell. He ran to the edge of the map, turned around and ran ALL THE WAY BACK and started killing some more. The second time he took off running towards the edge I sent my military chasing him.
When my entire squad was about 8 tiles away from the edge I get a fucking elephant siege, who are somehow riding great horned owls.
Nothing was spared, but I ended up trapping the whole army inside and flooding my entire fort with magma.
What are some awesome "fuck it" self destruct strategies? If all goes to shit, I want to be able to like, literally blow up my fortress.
Ideas?
Build your entire fortress on a support. Even if its only a 1 block drop, the amount of stuff above should squish dwarves like dough. Or as I personally prefer - mine really deep and let the critters below free reign into your fort - and we ain't talking Troglodytes here
How do I get traders down underground to a trade depot?
If im reading correctly I have to use ramps, but how should I set that up?
It needs to be three wide, and each 'landing' needs to be 3 deep.
So,
^+++v
^+++v
^+++v
stepped. you can maybe cut the floor to two wide not sure if the upramp works.

If I understand correctly, you need to have a ramp decending to 3x3 platforms on the way down. Like, you channel a 4x3 hole, where one of those tiles is the ramp down, and you keep doing that on the edge of the hole further down. You can probably do it more effeciently, but I know that works.

This brought a tear to my eye. Such true, dwarfish vengeance
so you guys know how lava sources can be pressurized
I happened to come across a lava tube that's heavily pressurized (let's just say I barely avoided the fort flooding of lava moving stupidly fast. the mines were lost, though), and never runs out of lava or so it seems.
I wonder if I hook it up to a pipe that goes straight up how high I can get it to squirt out of the pipe.
Do people often do livesteams of Dwarf Fortress, and if not, would anyone be interested in watching one?
Do people often do livesteams of Dwarf Fortress, and if not, would anyone be interested in watching one?
IMO, the only entertaining part would be the complete and utter fuck up at the end. I'm not interested in the two hours of micromanagement beforehand.
[editline]hello reply[/editline]
Why watch dwarf fortress when you could be making your own calamity?

True, but I was intending it be more of a learning resource for those who want to learn. For people to be able to ask questions while someone is playing.

Well that's a good idea. I'd watch that (I have no idea how to trade yet :S)
Yeah, stuff covering basic fortress construction, ways to adapt embark profiles to different situations. I would also try and get a program to run along side the game window displaying all key presses to better illustrate how I'm doing things.
