Decided to try adventure mode again and got lost in a town trying to find the quest. I decided to end it by attacking the local animals. What resulted were hundreds of dogs, cats, and hens swarming my character and giving him a slow demise.
Playing Adventure mode a while back (Masterwork) I found a cave dragon inside one of the castle basements. Me and my companions set to work killing it and I managed to knock it unconscious. After which follows glancing off its skull for fifteen minutes until it finally bled to death.
Best part: That was my first kill. I went from nobody to the hero of the realm with one kill.
Like everyone else, most of my forts end at the stages of extreme FPS rape.
So I decided to embark in a more fun location. the edges between a Haunted Mountain, a Sinister Savannah and a Mirthful Savannah. So far, still nothing fun is happening. there's been at least 5 Goblin Ambush groups and 3 waves of Dark Gnome Kamikaze Charges. and yet I'm still got getting any deaths and no deaths means no unhappiness and no unhappiness means no fun!
Can I send a diplomat to the Goblins and tell them to stop with the crap ambushes and just send a siege already?
I hate abandoning forts, there's no fun to be had in doing that.

Oh, and I butchered the Elf and Human Caravans, so far, no response and It's early spring now, where are the elves?
Alright so I am new to the fortress of dwarves and I'll try to not come here for every question I have, but what should a newbie know aside from I'll probably die a few thousand times before having any idea what's going on?
To come here for every question, we'll help you out.

Honestly I try my best to get as many enemies as possible, yet it seems nobody wants to attack my fort.
Out of curiosity, when the liaison asks which dwarf you want promoted to baron, what do you guys do? Just suggest a random peasant to avoid losing a valuable, working dwarf?

Pretty much. Some people like to choose a guy based on what he likes, as a dwarf who wets himself with joy every time he sees a bit of granite will be more likely to make granite based mandates or whatever, but it really doesn't matter.
Standard operating procedure for me is to accidently choose some guy who has an obsession with whatever is not obtainable in my fort and watch him lose his shit.

Hypothetically...what If you elected someone who "just doesn't care anymore"
I'd LOVE to put a psycho-dwarf in charge.
Also:
My legendary mason was executed for failing to produce statues. I disabled all labours except masonry and engraving, designed a vast chamber, smoothed it, engraved it, filled it with statues, added two beds and assigned them to the offending noble and hammerer as congratulations.
Oh, wait, shit, I seem to have accidentally walled them in!

Don't be afraid to sound like a baby know-nothing dwarf. There are no stupid questions.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, even if they seem really easy or obvious. It also helps to have a friend that plays handy on IM or steam chat or something.
Also the wiki is your best friend. I can't think of a single object or mechanic that isn't listed in there.
Okay, you guys seem pretty helpful so at the moment I have this-
[t]http://i.imgur.com/CwoqzPz.png[/t]
done. Dwarves digging out a cave, others chopping down trees and gathering plants. I have some stockpiles set up near the cave entrance so I can move it in later. All I need is food at the moment, and no ponds by my puny baby fortress seem to have any fish in them. How would an expert set up a farm? What should I do with the animals roaming around? Can I move the caravan into my cave? How do I pick up the ores that seem to be on the ground in the cave?
Also is there a good texture pack for new players? I'm getting the hang of it, but I can't help but feel a different look might help.

Cobaltite is actually just a stone.

Farms can be planted above or underground. I'd recommend underground farms to grow your staple crop Plump Helmets. Fish and meat aren't really viable for a staple of the diet but are useful for supplementing your Fortress' diets and padding things out somewhat. Farm plots can be placed on any 'soil' so dig out an area that has a soil floor. clay, peat and sand also work. Don't worry about irrigation either. After you build a farm plot remember to open up its menu with q and then to designate what is grown during the different seasons. For your first farm I'd recommend just putting every season to plump helmets.
Animals can be butchered however if you want to keep them alive then you can designate a pasture by going to zones (i) and then pasture (n?). You manually assign animals to pasture and they'll then graze within the designated area.
Stone and ores will just lie on the ground until they're used. Fortresses tend to be incredibly messy with resources just lying around everywhere. You can dig out an area and then designate a stone stockpile (p -> s) but at the moment you have much higher priorities.
Consider building a still and making some barrels in a carpenter's workshop. When winter comes the water'll most likely freeze depending on your biome (anything temperate or colder) and your dwarves may die of dehydration unless you can get your booze production going. Fortunately plump helmets are brewable as well and can be grown all year round so your Dwarves have a lot of raw plump helmets washed down with plump helmet wine to look forward to.

And yeah, cobaltite is just an economic stone. Its only value is the fact it looks nice and blue.
What about the yellow looking thing in the top room? What's that one?
What about the yellow looking thing in the top room? What's that one?
The yellow is some sort of gem. Anything that has that shape is a gem of some sort.
If you ever don't know what something is, you can examine it with k. If you're still not sure look at what its called and then see if its on the wiki. Especially useful when it comes to identifying stone and ores and what they're useful for.
So, I think I might make Crow Fortress. Already got cheap trainable giant crows on embark, gotta have something else to make it interesting. Evil Biome no doubt, probably an above-ground fort built on towers like a crows nest with no main building on the ground or below it. Make use of War Giant Crows and an all marksdwarf military.
Any other handicaps worth putting in?

tips, hints would be appreciated
So, I may be being ridiculously stupid, but why do everyones forts seem to be dug into a straight line of a mountain and feature a river running down the back? None of my embarks have ever had anything like that? I tend not to embark near mountain ranges though, is that why?
Depends on your choice of area. Most people deliberately choose areas with rivers, and tend to make sure that the river is either in the centre of the map or at the extreme north, south, east or west. People often choose to embark in areas with a lot of metals, which tend to have elevation changes, thus the mountains. It also makes it a bit more interesting, if I embark on a flat area, I tend to just go for a generic tower design which is boring as hell.
So I finally hit the caverns on a fortress separate from the one I normally play.
Five people died before I realised a Cavy croc and a giant toad had declared war on the fort and on each other.

I always look for embark locations that have 2 rivers intersecting with a large change in elevation.
It allows me to have awesome forts like this:
(i used the mousewheel to zoom out because my max resolution is tiny)

[t]http://i.imgur.com/5Y8e7Yq.png[/t] -- entrance hallways with retractable bridges and ballista

This fort has only existed for a little over a year of playtime though, so i'm still in the process of setting everything up.

I think you mean a year of game-time, or else you might just be dorfy as fuck.
[sp]I might just be an idiot, but I've always assumed playtime to be the time played in real time :v:[/sp]
had another siege which made my food problems more manageable thanks to the healthy population cut
then simultaneous a titan made of steam and a forgotten beast (joining three already down in the caverns) arrived, both of which had a path to my base and goddamn they move freakishly fast
anywho my stray wonderdogs tore both of them new arseholes where their limbs used to reside, not even giving my 100+ strong military enough time to arrive

100+ military
by armok that's a lot of soldiers

if they are all active at once
the fortress starves to death
this is the price of having 3/4s of the populace militarised
Are clothing items such as headware, mittens, and cloaks necessary?
