Though theoretically, since Adamantine can be made into thread, couldn't you make a book out of it as well?

Downloaded this on my new laptop, within thirty minutes I've already killed and robbed two Elf caravans, bring it on you forest dwelling pussies.
I want to find some cheap laptop that isn't owned by my school so I can bring DF wherever.
Under 300 would be nice but probably unlikely.

Looks good, especially for $275. I'm not sure about Windows 8 but I'm sure it won't have issues.

It should run just fine on Windows 8.
Can somebody please give me some type of beginners guide to this game? I always wanted to try it but I could never understand what the fuck was going on.

Start with the quickstart guide on the wiki. It's a fantastic place to get going. There are YouTube tutorials as well, but DF is easier to get into if you can easily go back over part of whatever guide you're using.
Ask any questions you have, we'll be happy to answer. The wiki is a great place for information as well.
Alright I'll check it out, thanks for the help.

Only one solution: Atom Smasher.
The one thing I've never figured out about this game is how animals can still be adopted when they are set to unavailable.
I tried fortress mode finally.
pirate, Supreme Overlord has canceled Babysit special education class: Went insane.

Look guys, dwarf fortress in real life.
God damn I really need to get back into this, I took a break after I was sick from sleep deprivation because of sleeping only 1-2 hours a night due to my constant playing. Now that I think about it, that was the second time that that happened. Time to do it all again.
I've been meaning to get into this for ages so I gave it a go today. I'm fairly certain I may have fucked my fortress up already and I barely know what I'm doing but damn it, I'm determined to get the craziest, most retarded pack of dorfs the land ever did see.
Damnit, the Bay12 forums are giving me "504 Gateway Time-Out" errors while I'm trying to read about dorfs.

I constantly maintain Dwarf Fortress is much easier to learn if you approach it with the right mindset.
This is the right mindset.

I disagree. I couldn't wrap my head around how to do anything in DF until I actually read a well written guide that pointed stuff out step by step. It was too confusing and the interface was too terrible.

Where is this 'guide' you are referring to?
I'd like to get into the game but so far I just keep getting more and more confused the farther I go in the game.

Mainly this is what people refer to when they say "good guide". The rest of the wiki too.
I watched 1 lets play and did the quickstart guide and thats all I needed to do.
Dwarf Therapist is a necessity.

well obviously it's not all you need, but if you keep thinking to yourself "Oh no this is hard I can't do this" then you're never going to learn it. It's the willingness to make mistakes and then learn from those mistakes as well as having the Wiki open pretty much constantly that help you learn the game once you get the essentials down.
Yeah, for the essentials it probably helps to have a manual. But that's what the wiki's for.

It was even more of a necessity when Dwarves arrived with all labors turned off by default.

So far I've been getting by with a combination of the wiki and a whole lot of "Oh shit I should probably make <insert thing here> or <insert bad thing here> will probably happen". Like when my store room got full of dead hamsters. That seemed like a good time to work on the whole refuse thing.
I just came up with something.
If, in the future, pressure could hold up unsupported structures and clouds were properly implemented, you could theoretically build a floating fortress in the clouds which is held aloft by a massive high-pressure spire of water and replenish that water with the clouds.
