Tribes: Ascend v3: Would the real shazbot please stand up

In Tribes Ascend the goals of the competitive players and the pub players meet up in almost all cases.
In comp, snipers are too powerful. Same with pub games. Haven't you ever played a pub where there was some level 35 sniper who hit every single capper every single time? I see it far too often.
In comp, chasing is useless because cappers go so fast. Isn't it annoying in pubs when a good capper comes in at 350 sanics and is back at the base in 3 seconds?
Haven't you ever been killed by a raider as a jugg in 4 seconds flat because he's so good with his automatic? Or when you're playing with projectiles only and someone attacks you with an SMG and it's like "whelp I guess I will just die now"
These are common goals that help comp and pub play.
"I don't like it when competitive players influence the balance, but those nerfs brought up by the competitive players themselves seem like good ideas!!!!"
Thats not the point zing boy.
The point is some of the ideas and comments are pretty good but taking the whole thing for one side is bad. Still Tribes is a game for comp players and that's is the road that Hi-rez took to promote the game.
Is the automatic nerf going to apply to the NJ5?
Is the automatic nerf going to apply to the NJ5?
Very likely, one of the one stated objectives is to nerf raiders.

I agree with all your other lines except this one, this is a bloody stupid one in my opinion.
If you play projectile only you're asking to get attacked by automatic by afar, it's called strategy.
When I see someone using his automatic on me, I stay grounded, move heratically, I use mine and shoot back, and I try to get a better terrain advantage.
And if the guy is really good with his smg to the point you got killed even with all these advantage, I think it's not ENTIRELY because he's using an automatic, you still have to aim the damn bullshit.
Maybe it can use a damage falloff nerf as they are trying to put, that could be good, but the damage at close range doesn't need to be changed in my opinion.
I know it's not a glitch, I just couldn't figure out how to make it always not need to reload when I swap back. So I just switch to my other weapon after firing a shot and after 5 seconds it'll reload itself? Sounds simple enough.
Works wonders for a soldier with the thumper, spinfusor and quickdraw.

Developers tend to listen to the competitive players more because they are the most skilled in the game. They spend hours theorycrafting the best ways to do what needs to be accomplished in a normal game, and will spend as much time perfecting them in practice. They know a lot more about the game than your random pubbie who plays a few games a week and thinks a weapon is OP because he doesn't adapt his strategy to counter it.
E-sports doesn't ruin games, they help them grow and help them become legitimately balanced. They also help bolster the community and bring new players in and keep old players still playing. Look at a game like Brood War if you don't believe me.
What does hurt games is people who have this 1 sided tunnel vision mindset where they refuse to adapt their techniques and strategies in a game to help them become better, and instead think the game should be adapting around a play style that fits all players instead.

God I hate this.
I love chasing (Mostly because I can't cap at 350 sanics) but if the enemy cappers have at least a semi-good route then I'm completely fucked. Thrusting from the flag stand and nitron jumping can only get me so fast...
Not a fan of automatics, neither that I am good with them.
Anyways, the X1 is the only automatic i truly hate, the others don't annoy me much.

The LMG is pretty bad. I'm guilty of using it and I am full of shame.
But damn, being able to morph into a Doombringer anytime you want is too good not to use at this point.
I find automatics harder (at some situations at least) and more rewarding to use than "shoot the landing guy" spinfusors and thumpers, I hope the nerf won't be too big. SMG Raider is a lot of fun, if anything they should buff the shitty AR of Soldier and nerf the X1LMG. That's my opinion.
I'm sorry some of you have had the rude awakening that Tribes : Ascend is a competitive game, always said it is and want's to make it's money by having a fantastic esports scene. It is so necessary for Hi-Rez to make the changes to the SMG's. The game is way more exciting and thrilling using the explosive weapons in terms of skill to get those MA's and the visual. The SMG (any chain based weapon) variety and power in this game is extraordinary and is dominant in competitive plays. I'm glad that SMG's are getting a nerf and also the soldier AR is being buffed relative to the rest.
I want to see a strong competitive scene. I want to see people play this game to practice and achieve greatness, I want ranked to be a place where I can play a PUG style game with serious players. I want the metagame not to focus around the two current interactions (Sniper-Capper and Raider-Defense).
I'm ranting, but people to man up and play better, practice harder and recognize this is a game for skill to flourish, not a general manshoot.
Edit: Also shazpunch the current planned time for the comp game is 5pm EST on saturday (hopefully) - If anyone can not make it tell me as soon as possible so I can pull in a sub/ringer. Also the game we missed would like to play a scrim, can people tell me a night during the week we would be able to do that (sundays aint so hot because mondays).

Sure is good to get better, but sorry, I like to play this game every few days and have some mindless fun with fractals and. Grenade launchers
Sure is good to get better, but sorry, I like to play this game every few days and have some mindless fun with fractals and. Grenade launchers
You still can, but it isn't going to ruin the fun for those who want to play the game ALL the time.
Sure is good to get better, but sorry, I like to play this game every few days and have some mindless fun with fractals and. Grenade launchers
So you're saying that they should ignore balancing the game competitively because YOU want to have some mindless fun? That's kind of selfish.
I also don't see how any balance changes effects your ability to have fun with fractals and launchers.
Sure is good to get better, but sorry, I like to play this game every few days and have some mindless fun with fractals and. Grenade launchers
They are balancing around good players who are playing the objective in an organized fashion. Facerolling your keyboard on the way to the generator isn't being touched, don't worry.
Nothing feels better than to kill a full healed heavy armored sandraker with my nova blaster.
Nothing feels better than to kill a full healed heavy armored sandraker with my nova blaster.
Which reminds me the Nova Blaster won't be nerfed so it may be even more fun to use now.
i must be the only person who find soldier AR pretty good.
Where are the sound files for Tribes located? I need some Shazbot sounds.
games\tribes alpha\TribesGame\CookedPC
Something in there I think.
It's probably a .upk file so you'll have to extract them
[editline]5th June 2012[/editline]
or a .u file
dunno what those are
I wanted to update you on a couple important changes coming in the next patch to Tribes (tentatively planned for next week), as the changes might impact how you choose to spend your XP between now and the upgrade date.
There are a number of things in the next patch, including our largest to date re-balancing of the weapons (driven based on feedback directly taken from a council of competitive players). We will also be introducing a large number of new weapons, which are essentially variants of existing weapons, giving people more options to find weapons that fit their exact preferred playstyle. And there are a couple new maps.
Perhaps the biggest change, especially for newer players, is that we are introducing new ways to improve and speed player advancement (based on feedback from the community).
With the next patch, you will no longer spend XP on weapon and armor upgrades. Each weapon, pack, perk, and armor class will progress automatically towards their upgrades as you play with them equipped.
This is greatly to your advantage, as you can simultaneously progress many items in your loadout (up to 7), and save all of the XP you earn for unlocks such as new weapons and new perks. In general this will significantly increase how quickly you earn unlocks in the game.
Think of it as each item having their own little progression bar, and as you play it fills up and gives you free unlocks, until you master a weapon. The progression on weapons is based on your ending match XP (think of it as duplicating that value to each weapon), so it is increased by performance, boosting, first win of the day, and badge earning.
Some important things to consider:
Any upgrades you have purchased prior to the upgrade will remain purchased.
When the patch is live, you will no longer be able to acquire upgrades with saved XP, and your progression on your next weapon upgrades will start from the beginning for that particular upgrade.
If there are upgrades you wish to have immediately unlocked, it's recommended you purchase them now. Otherwise, you will have to start progression toward your next unlock from the starting point for that unlock. Keep in mind, though, that you may wish to save all of your XP now with the knowledge that future unlocks will happen automatically on the weapons you wish to play with.
We are excited about this change and are excited to hear your feedback and concerns.
Thanks, Stew

That's... certainly interesting.
Still feels awkward for those that paid a lot of XP toward upgrades, and now have them completely lost.
and what about boosted/vip players? they should get upgrades faster.
not sure about this new weapons..
i think they should do both system, u either buy upgrades with xp or with normal playing
I assume it'll take longer to "earn" the upgrade now than to just get the 2k XP or whatever.
Sounds like a bad change, honestly.
We will also be introducing a large number of new weapons, which are essentially variants of existing weapons, giving people more options to find weapons that fit their exact preferred playstyle.
I hope these are balanced counterparts of weapons like a smg that fires 1 projectile per second dealing 10 damage get a counterpart that fire 10 projectiles per second that deals 1 damage. Still, that could be done with a slider.

Good thing I unlocked the damage increase to armored targets on all my explosive shit so I can actually be useful instead of playing for weeks to get it.
looks like they will keep xp upgrading

Well, I definitively have a favorite class.
Also, does the facebook thing still exist or is it too late to make an account there?
This actually works out way better. Now all XP will be used for unlocks and you will unlock new weapons quicker. They will be adding a button to instantly master the weapon with XP. It is good because casual players will get unlocks for playing, and more hardcore players can focus on getting up to comp loadouts quicker.
