Ok.. so I am in Chapter 1 of Witcher 2. I beat Witcher one a few years back. I just loaded it up to compare. Ummm...
Witcher 1 = acquired taste with excellent narrative
Witcher 2 = Much more polished and playable in every way imaginable
So if you want the full back story and experience, play Witcher 1 and read the books. Otherwise, just read some summaries and go right to Witcher 2 :)
Fighting with [sp]mercenaries in the tunnels without cat potion[/sp] in chapter 2 looks stunning. Those lights they've got produce the best dynamic lighting I've ever seen.
Also I've slaughtered [sp]Draug[/sp] in 20 seconds with about 9 hits and no spells :wtc:
Yeah doesn't make sense to me, especially since rolling does not require vigor. Makes combat unncessicarily hard.
I understand they don't want you to be able to block 24/7, but there has to be a better way to do it then to make it so it uses vigor.
If they do that, and make it so quen is less OP that would balance out a lot of the difficulty curve the game has. Makes it so early game fights are more manageable slightly, and maybe makes it so quen isn't so OP that if you use it, you'll never die.
IMO quen should just reduce damage by half, with a critical chance of negating all damage to an attack (which it would do an effect for). Mix this in with a better blocking mechanic and it won't be so crazy.
quen is like, required if you want to survive
if you don't use quen you get assraped instantly
So how long is this game? Also, is there any replayability?
So how long is this game? Also, is there any replayability?
The replayability is really big, because depending on your choice in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and 3 are COMPLETELY different. Different quests, story, characters etc. Also the game has like 16 endings. As for the how long it is, it depends on your play style. I saw some guy finish it in like 28 hours, but for example I still didn't finish Chapter 1 and I'm 17 hours in.(Chapter 2 is the longest) So, there is quite a bit of playtime.
Also the game has like 16 endings.e.
Extremely misleading, the game has practically the same ending, but the dialogue and the character(s) present in a very short cinematic can be different. Not a bad game by any means, but this '16 completely different endings' bit is nonsense.

Interesting, sounds like it will keep me occupied for a while which is good. Guess I'll pick it up, thanks for your input!

No problem. I don't think you will regret it at all, the game is a superb RPG experience. If you like an adult, immersive RPG, with a good storytelling and amazing graphics/environments The Witcher 2 is a logical choice. Enjoy the game!
One question, disregarding the fact that I didn't read the entire thread: is it worth it to play W1 before ploughing into the second part? Judging by some parts of the thread it's incredibly boring, but what if the W2 story ties in completely like Mass Effect did? Don't wanna miss out on that...
If you can get through the first few chapters of it you'll be over the hump and hooked on it to the very end. That's about 20 hours of 90% padding though, if the constant repetitive combat won't get you all the running around for all these annoying pricks will. Halfway through the game though the story actually picks up momentum and the quality really ramps up. Do play it, it's a good game, but if you find yourself falling out of love with it don't push yourself to get through a game that you really don't like.

Thanks for the input. I did suspect it to be bullshit and a marketing trick, but I didn't finish the game myself so I had no clue.
Jesus fucking Christ
how the fuck am I supposed to defeat Letho?
The guy does fucking 40 points of damage with every attack and I can only do 5-10 at max. He constantly has quen on so I can't do jack shit, he's constantly throwing aards and ignis that are impossible to dodge.

Remember when Fallout 3 was said to have like a thousand endings? Turns out what counted as a 'different' ending was a different combination of slides that were basically just screenshots from the game.

Turn the difficulty to easy for the duration of the fight then back to normal. He is the hardest enemy in the entire game.

Yeah, turn down the dificulty to easy. I play on Normal, I've beaten Kayran in like 3-4 tries and didn't have much issue with most of the creatures, but that fucking fight drove me insane. I wanted to rip my keyboard in half.

Use aard. After every blast you can get 4 hits in. When your vigor runs out just run around til you can use aard again. Didn't get hit once using this strategy.
I was about to set it to EASY for that fight.. but I wanted to beat it on my own. Here is what I did:
QUEN until his QUEN goes down, rolling at every opportunity. Then, set ARDEN (Trap?) and pummel him while his QUEN is down. Took me about 1.5 hours of fighting to figure it out.. my winning battle lasted about 20 minutes (!) It was extremely rewarding after wanting to punch kittens the first few hours of fighting him!
It was extremely rewarding except... [sp] I thought I got to kill that dirty hunk of meat!! ARGH!! [/sp]
haha dude i love how everybody just says "use QUEN"
honestly aard just fucking stops his ass
he's so slow that you can easily outrun and outmaneuver him and when you use aard/yrden you can stop him enough to get a few strikes in when his quen shield drops.
I was pretty disappointed because he was such an easy kill.
So I was playing the day after the "Rapture" and I took this picture but I forgot to upload it. Speaks for itself

The Witcher has returned
[editline]24th May 2011[/editline]
also I got stuck there for about five minutes, the nekkers weren't damaging me
Christ almighty, this made me jump.
[sp] Nothing scared me more than a fuckton of Nekkers that emerged after I had finished the Death Symbolized quest (Where you get the Dun Banner standard). There had to be like 20 of them.[/sp]
I still have nightmares. :ohdear:

[sp]I went back because I remembered I needed Nekker hearts but they never came back :([/sp]

yeah, quen is pretty overrated, if you play the game well you shouldn't need it

[sp]I kept running and they never tunneled away. I chucked all my Grapeshot and spammed Quen.[/sp] I would've reaped the rewards, but I still have a 300 lbs limit. I don't know how to increase my backpack limit. :c

[sp]I looted Cedrics dead corpse and he had "Elven Armor" which had 15 additional slots, [/sp] other than that I haven't found anything else
Not to mention it was horrible armor in comparison to my [sp]Kayran Armor[/sp]

So.. what is the big choice? I haven't noticed it yet, and I believe I'm done with Chapter 1. Probably best to put it in spoiler tags.

This fight drove me insane. I've been playing on Hard and just ran into it. Six tries later, I was ready to destroy my desk. The best thing is to go back to a quicksave (I hope you have one) before the fight and prepare. I made myself a fuckton of grapeshot bombs to get rid of his shield; also, three potions of swallow, (sword damage) and (resistances) helped me immensely. If you prepare out the ass for him and spam ground traps (as they seem to block his spells sometimes for no reason), the fight is a lot easier, if long.
yeah, quen is pretty overrated, if you play the game well you shouldn't need it
It becomes a liability when you use it so much instead of just blocking. If you have a good enough swordsmanship skill, you can just block pretty much every single incoming blow with little to no loss in vigor. You can also get the "twirl" ability so your attacks hit more than one target at a time, too, instantly turning your heavy attacks in to crowd control. It's just as effective as a high placed Quen and it does more damage, too.
[editline]24th May 2011[/editline]
oh, plus you can counter attack (and the counters usually lead to devastating blows)
I just leveled up swordsmanship and aard, after that I pretty much never needed quen again. Leveled up aard can stun whole groups at once and also does some damage. On top of that it usually stuns enemies to a state where you can just kill them with a single hit.
Letho was really easy too, just aard his ass when the shield is down and keep hitting him. He can't do anything, you can easily beat him without taking any hits that way.
aard is like the best sign in the game imho
igni doesn't seem to do a lot unless coupled with bombs. meanwhile aard just throws people off of their feet if powerful enough and you can just gut them like pigs.
reloaded to a previous file and prepped ahead.
Did a bunch of sidequests, found a kickin' rad sword, and made a shitload of potions and sword oils. Those combined with spamming aard before he can quen and then strong attacking his ass, I took him down with ease.
But I ended up failing the melitele's heart quest

igni does pretty pathetic damage but it seems to incapacitate people better than aard, they're out of action longer with the 'SHIT I'M ON FIRE' than by just being knocked down
aard has the distinction of working on almost every enemy though

I'm doing this right now. I REALLY hate how he spams quen and whenever I get close enough to aard him he does it to me first.
Well, IGN and Gamespot gave this game 9.0 -- While that is a great score, here are some PC games that scored higher (WTF):
Anything below 9.5 is really not a good review for this game...
Comparing, look at the PC games that scored higher than Witcher 2 on IGN:
* Prince of Persia
* Sims 4
* Bad Company 2 Vietnam
* Resident Evil 5
* F.E.A.R.
* Call of Duty WAW (Kill me now)
* Bioshock 2
Need I go on? 9.0 is a great score but Witcher 2 is THEE best PC game I have played in a long time.
