I think gearbox knew exactly what they were going to do storywise when they finished the first. I just mass spoilered the bottom. Some spoilers to BL2.
[sp]OK. You know how in the end of BL where you open the thing and the tentacle monster came out, and at the end she seems slightly surprised you beat it and says "Sorry I couldn't tell you what was inside, but it couldn't have unfolded any other way."
I think that handsome jack made angel not tell the original 4 hunters that they were going to face a massive monster. Jack was expecting them to die because they were surprised, but since the vault was already open, it didn't matter because the eridium was already out.
Then the camera zooms out to a metallic yellow and white themed satellite with the vault sign and "angel" on the side. To me it seems like a hyperion reference, with the primary color theme.
You then give the vault key to tannis. Later in BL2, you hear that hyperion violently stole the vault key from tannis. Angel told you to give it to tannis. Then jack would know where to find it.

I was mainly commenting on how well everything crossed over to BL2 storywise. Like they set up a lot of key components in the second game that, looking back at the first, make the first game ending make even more sense.

Even if you didn't, it was obviously Hyperion. Everyone and their dog knew that. Also I don't really think it was a grand plan set in place for the story. I bet it's more likely they just worked with what they had. If that was the case they did a bang up job of making it actually somewhat decent though.

Makes me pretty much invincible against bandits, on the odd chance I take a hit, the shield recover before I take another. Plus it works while my shields are depleted. So I'm invincible until I get hit with anything but a bullet. It'll be fantastic on my Zerker (when I level him from 12 :V)

This is what I am trying to say. They left a few elements in place in the ending of the first game, but the fact that it transferred so well is what kinda surprises me.
