What is the point of completing optional objectives in missions? Do you get more money/xp or something else?

Am I the only person who legitimately uses [sp]Bane[/sp] as a weapon? [sp]It does corrosive damage and has a decent fire rate and damage level[/sp] and I've found that makes it an amazing close-range Second-Wind weapon versus Hyperion forces.

But when we do get together we play from 9pm to 3am and it's glorious.

They seem to have less crit multiplier than regular snipers, which results in less DPS. You also can't shoot very fast doing what you're saying to do.
