Why have I only played this game once? I mean I have it on my PC right now, twice. Is it worth getting into? Or has the playerbase suffered significant reductions?
It's free to play. If anything, it's grown.

I have just starting playing this last week and I have to say it's been a nice ride so far.
It's a lot of fun and f2p got to level 12 so far.

Yes it seems like a great model but what parts of the game would you want to pay for and what is useful or nice to actually pay for, it looks like it's better to max out your character before running around in the C-Store.
I have decided to go for the Cruiser class and it's been quite a ride so far but how do you switch your officers ability in space? (Torpedo Yield 1 to a other the officer has?)
I have also run into some (ground) missions which were filled with bugs the mission target fell through the ground with no hope of ever completing the mission.

The Reddit fleet isn't that bad and very active but my main is {UFP} which I've been playing Trek games with since 2002.

You just do a 2 minute test which basically just makes sure you have basic common sense and manners and then you are let in. To stay in you just fill out a 30 second form every month to say that you are still active.
I basically just hop onto teamspeak with them to do some STF's or other events they have on, you don't have to be a hardcore STO player to play with them.
