The trick is using lava buckets on ponds of water,not the other way around,gives much more obsidian

I just connected pools of water with pools of lava, so I was basically digging underwater.

Just to confirm, are there pipes and pumps in Terraria yet? 'cause a lava pump drawing lava up from the Underworld could make a pretty neat Obsidian factory.
Also, i've mentioned many times the concept of a "Gaiathorn", which would be a sort of upgraded Vilethorn used by the Dryad as a signature weapon. The Vilethorn in general is for mid-game prehardmode, but eventually the virtues of it's multi-hitting power becomes overshadowed by the weak amounts of damage it does to endgame enemies (it only deals 1-3 damage per hit to high-defense fools).
Perhaps in a later update, Vilethorns could be upgraded by using one of the two Powders (Vile or Purification), yielding either the purified Gaiathorn which does more damage and dolls out more hits, or a fully-corrupted Foulthorn which also deals more damage but causes some kind of brambles to spawn on the ground as opposed to the more hits deal. These Thornsprouts could potentially damage enemies like regular Briar/Brambles do to players, as well as slow them down, making a Foulthorn a good choice for building up defenses. Nonetheless a Gaiathorn would be ideal for effectively fighting high level enemies after the regular Vilethorn ceases to become as effective.
Also, should one be able to cultivate the Vilethorns similar to how one cultivates regular plants? After all the Vilethorn IS technically a plant.

There are no pipes, wires just connect a pump inlet and outlet. So I guess mechanically yes, one of their functions is as a pipe, but not only. It's also instant.

I didn't mean I would be kicking ass with that armor,I meant I was making progress towards being able to start hardmode.

I checked the wiki, a bunch of people seem to think that it causes a goblin army to appear. Anyone else have this happen?
it is possible it might spawn a goblin scout, which then could be farmed for gobbie army mats.
they should make some of the goblin outfits wearable.
