I just tried playing online with my friend last night... Is it always so laggy? I mean, we're in the same state, but monsters would constantly teleport all over the place, so we just have to swing wildly at them if it seems like they're in our vicinity. When a fallen star hits, it disappears for about 5 seconds, then reappears where it should have impacted. And it's weird because there seems to be no lag in anything we do, like breaking and placing blocks, throwing items to each other, etc. It's just the monsters and other moving things that are laggy as fuck. Is there anything we can do to cut down on lag? Using Hamachi btw

Some enemies though such as bats and meteor heads always seem to lag no matter what. (They even lag when I host games and my computer and internet speed are far more than good enough.)
I'm hosting it myself, and Speedtest.net says my upload speed is a little over 4 Mbps, is that too low?
I'm hosting it myself, and Speedtest.net says my upload speed is a little over 4 Mbps, is that too low?
I play it with 0.5 Mbps upload speed and it barely lags :v:
I'm hosting it myself, and Speedtest.net says my upload speed is a little over 4 Mbps, is that too low?
That's more than adequate. Probably an issue with your computer not being able to keep up then. Have you tried closing as many background processes as you can before hosting?
I'm hosting it myself, and Speedtest.net says my upload speed is a little over 4 Mbps, is that too low?
Try without Hamachi. I'm not sure if Terraria uses TCP or UDP for it's networking updates, but if it uses UDP then Hamachi could cause slowdowns.
from what i've heard hamachi usually just causes problems more than it helps. you might free up some resources, disable any AV (sometimes an "exception" isn't enough for some AV.) and if all else run a performance test on your comp. just make sure its not one of those scam ones that give you false results.
speedtest.net is the only site you'd ever need for hosting.
I was using Hamachi earlier to host a server to play with one of my friends and it worked pretty well. There were some big lag areas here and there, but it was overall pretty good for me.
That's a bit much for a laggy server, it's much more likely because of Hamachi or slow upload. [editline]11th February 2012[/editline] @Xilo

So facepunch, if you had two spare copies of this game you bought while it was holiday cheap, what would you do with them? Specifically?
Do fire imps spawn inside your house?
yes; enemies regularly spawn but there's no NPC living in it so yeah; basically they still spawn
has there been any word of an update?
it'll probably be like last time, the update will be close when they start talking about stuff in it. though it makes me wonder, what more will they add? i kinda hope they lower the potion Debuff a tad, even 45 secs with a trinket for it on me sometimes isn't enough when i have to factor in getting hit by unseen things on a server.
I kinda agree, 60 seconds is a bit too much, especially if you accidentally drink a weaker potion. Personally, I think that the "Potion Sickness" should vary in duration depending on the healing item used. I'm thinking about 15 seconds for little things like Mushrooms, Bottled Water, Goldfish, etc. 30 seconds for Lesser Heals, 45 for regular Heals, and reserve the massive 60 for Greater Heals. That way Philosopher's Stone could still have a use Potions-wise. Also, speaking of the Philosopher's Stone, one should be able to plonk it down on a table and use it to turn lesser metals into Gold. Because hey why not?
Just in case some of you didn't already know this page existed: http://wiki.terrariaonline.com/Upcoming_features Who knows what features in that list will actually be introduced.
Ok, I'm once again trying to play online with my friend (this time without hamachi), so how do I tell my friend what my IP is once I start the server? Can I just go to whatismyip and give him that, or do you have to enter something special for the Terraria server? Because I tried that, and it never seemed to connect. He waited several minutes, and nothing ever happened. I've tried googling all of this, but all the information I found was super-outdated, saying the game doesn't currently support multiplayer of any kind, and shit like that. Hold on... I think I've solved my problem, but I'm waiting for my friend to get back so it can be tested. So everyone might be able to disregard this post.
Do you have your ports for Terraria forwards through your router settings?

Also having the game automatically pick the strongest potion when you hit the heal button.
That'd work; pop Bottled Water on there as well. Also I really hope they tease a new update sooner or later; i've heard next to nothing from them recently.
I heard terraria is awesome, but i an't buy it. Could someone say whats so good in it please? :)
I heard terraria is awesome, but i an't buy it. Could someone say whats so good in it please? :)
It's a sidescroller shooter combined with a sandbox similar to minecraft.
It's a sidescroller shooter combined with a sandbox similar to minecraft.
What are mechanics? How big game is content wise? Game replayability compared to minecraft?
So facepunch, if you had two spare copies of this game you bought while it was holiday cheap, what would you do with them? Specifically?
Keep them to myself and laugh at the beggars.
What are mechanics? How big game is content wise? Game replayability compared to minecraft?
It has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more content than minecraft, the replayability is kinda 'eh...' when you get the final equipment, but it took me just under 80 hours to get to the final stuff, doing it all solo alone.
