Oh.
Well since this has come up, can someone be very specific with how the game is affected by kills etc.
I remember someone said "killing one person only changes the game dramatically" and I don't believe that, I know doing big changes obviously affects it, but how do the random NPC kills work and how much influence do they have on the game?
[sp]Well I basically killed everyone I came across and Samuel was all pissed off at me and demanded I get off his boat, and then said he's alert them of my presence and shoots a gun at the lighthouse. You can kill him before he does it though.[/sp]
Woah woah woah, I got HIGH CHAOS ending with several hundred people killed, and Samuel never did anything like that.
I don't think it's tied solely to chaos, but also to who you killed/how you did some missions.
So I wrote a review on this game. Just looking for opinions.
Just one small thing I'd like to point out. You mention there is no upgrade to make you more silent. That's false because in the 3rd level you can easily find blueprint for stealth boots.
I also think you give Valve too much credit for their silent protagonist. Dishonored isn't very good with the story, but it's solid enough to allow me to immerse myself.
What I can't agree with is your price tag. This game needs support and is worth more than 10 dollars.
For those of you who didn't know, those things you pick up that look like a bunch of little rocks stuck in a piece of hardened cement is actually [sp]whale puke[/sp]
It's actually quite valuable (although I forget why).
[sp]Do you guys think the Regent would have had Campbell's support if Campbell knew he introduced the rat plague?[/sp]

I would definitely forgo the mask for a tricorne.

Campbell is an ass but I don't think he's that horrible.
I love the small things in this game that don't really matter but show that your actions have an effect.
Case in point: In the Golden Cat mission, if you loot the [sp]art dealer's safe and grab the Boyle party invitation inside, in the Boyle mission you'll find him wandering outside the main gate.[/sp]
I just love things like that.
Edit:
Also the guard will say that there was someone just there pretending to be [sp]Mr. Bunting[/sp]
An amusing coincidence I observed when playing Napoleon: Total War:

I have a LOT of problems with your review.
1) The game's stealth isn't punishing in the way a game like Thief or Batman: AA was, however, the stealth is still rewarding, and deep. The exit strategy of "attack" is one YOU as a player are free to make every time. It's not punishing. It's not sticking you into one situation and only giving you the ability to crouch out through 5 different entrances. No, it's giving you the option to take the fight to them. However, you can just as easily be a coward and run away or disappear. Many ways to do this.
2) Upgrades. There is an upgrade for running silently. So, bad complaint in my mind. As well as it's not a pure stealth game, so having those combat upgrades is needed for those who aren't stealthing, a major part of this game.
3) I found the games atmosphere to be thick. There's so much in the world once you start reading notes, studying paintings and layouts, hearing conversations, it's a game that I get totally immersed in the world of. I'm sorry you don't, but I don't see the atmosphere being weak.
4) Gordon Freeman argument. That's so subjective I don't even want to touch it because the story of HL1, and HL2 is terrible. The writing is terrible. The story telling is the only good thing about it, how it presented the story to you, Dishonoured isn't comparable in anyway to me because it doesn't try and tell the story in the same way. Having a mute protagonist doesn't mean you're aiming at the Freeman throne.
5) The powers. You stress how Rat Swarm was a prominent power, the heart is a stupid addition to remove difficulty, and the powers in general are uninspired. I've never had to use, or even used Rat Swarm in three playthroughs, we're just going to have to disagree on that heart because I don't see it that way at all. I found the powers were pretty typical faire for this kind of game and maybe I wanted more out of them, but all in all it's not so bad. And I think the Rat Plague is actually an effective thing to leave in the game the way they did. It sets a tone and sets a gameplay mechanic you have access to based partly around your chaos.
6) Again, I don't see how the stealth is broken or boring.
So I wrote a review on this game. Just looking for opinions.
You seem pretty biased. You praise games like The Witcher and say that the main character is the best written character of all time. Why? You also seem to think that simply because Valve is Valve, they did the silent protagonist right. You really need to explain your reasoning.
"So you’re playing the faceless protagonist ala Gordon Freeman, but you’re not playing a Valve game so you don’t actually care about him. Remember, Valve is the exception to the rules."
Why does the fact that it's a Valve game mean that you magically care about the character?
You also have a tendency to say things like "bad" and "broken" without giving much explanation as to why. -Or when you do explain, the explanations seem heavily biased and bent in the direction of what you want the game to be, not what the game is. It's a singleplayer game where you can choose stealth or action or any blend in between. A game with a variety of ways to dispose of the various targets you're told to kill. It's a game about choice.
"It’s fun for a single playthrough, maybe two if you really get your rocks off on stealth games"
It isn't a stealth game. It's a choice game. Do you call Skyrim a stealth game because you can sneak and steal things? No, it's about choices and playstyle.
You blast Dishonored for its "broken" stealth mechanics simply because, if you choose to, you can fight. That doesn't break the game, you just seem to be stuck in the mindset that the game has to be just stealth and since it's not, it's "broken".
It's not a "stealth" game and doesn't need to follow the typical "get caught and die" formula.
Once again, it's a game about choice. You choose your playstyle. That doesn't make the game broken.
"The plague rats gimmick is cool a few times, but I didn’t think they’d make it a huge mechanic like they did. That was dumb."
Gimmick, dumb. You need to stop using such bland, nondescript words. Why is it a gimmick? Why do you think it's dumb? The rat plague is as much a part of the story and world as everything else is in the game.
All in all you seem to have a pretty narrow view of the game and from what I can tell you went in with a lot of preconceptions about the game and were disappointed when things turned out to be not as you'd expected.
Review a game for what it is, not what you wanted it to be.
-and try not to use other games as reasons that the game you're reviewing is bad.
That WSJ review of Borderlands 2 comes to mind.

"but I didn’t think they’d make it a huge mechanic like they did."
I didn't even buy the power my entire playthrough.
Oh and about enemies not being able to kill you alone, play very hard it's much more fun that way, because they can.

"These are all encouraging you to go headlong into there and fuck shit up. Why isn’t there an upgrade that makes you run silently"
Isn't there a boot upgrade?
With the amount of health potions in this game, it is really hard for anything to kill you.
"but it’s getting a lot more praise than it should. It’s fun for a single playthrough, maybe two if you really get your rocks off on stealth games, but after that you’ll never really have an inclination to play it again. It’s worth a Steam Sale pickup in the future for like $10, but it sure as shit ain’t worth $60."
Lol, just because you don't appreciate the game doesn't mean it's not worth it's original price.
With the amount of health potions in this game, it is really hard for anything to kill you.
So play on hard and don't use health potions?

go play on very hard
I am the only person who never bothered with either Granny Rags or SLackjaw at any point in the game?
I only saw Granny Rags once at some random occasion and i just walked past her.
I recently went through the game without getting any of the powers besides blink, I only had to use it 4 times, once because I got stuck in a cliff and couldn't get out of it. Twice to get up the water elevator thing during [sp]the Lord Regent's assassination[/sp] The fourth time was in Daud's cell hole thing.
I actually just finished my second lethal play through, and didn't use blink a single time after the outsider dream.
Even on very hard you get 3-4 hits to go down. A potion gives you a lot of health, especially with the charms.

On very hard, one to two swings kills you, one bullet kills you at mid range, and assassins destroy you with their crossbows. What are you playing on

Tricorne hat and coat is pretty badass. It makes me wonder how the game would look if it was brought back a hundred years. Watchman dress more in the fashion of early 20th century Germans, currently. It'd be interesting to see the game with more powered wigs and breeches and shit.

wouldn't it be sounding, as opposed to cumming?
I'm pretty sure I'm on the hardest mode. Unless I'm silly and there's some "maximum" mode you can unlock in the game.

Video was from the first mission, so no armor.
Tried getting shot too, and it was about half health at point blank range. Now those thug's and their fire, that gets you.
So 3 attacks. Generally if you run into a couple of guys, 3 attacks takes no time at all.
I know I've been downed with a shot at point blank from full
I got Dishonored today after seeing a video on it. This game is fucking fun. I'd like to see it developed more, it still has a bunch of potential.
[editline]24th October 2012[/editline]
Also I can't decide between killing no one and killing everyone on my second playthrough. Which one is better? For the high/low chaos environment and events shit.

Depends on what ending you want I suppose.
Use of everything you have in your arsenal: High Chaos
Sneaking and blinking and mountains of sleepdarts: Low Chaos
go play on very hard
I have and it's still easy. I honestly want a harder difficulty, because on my high-chaos very hard playthrough I still was able to rambo missions.
Blink is just so powerful in virtually any context.
I played it on very hard the first time around for shits and giggles.
Other then a few times where i instantly died because unexpected AI behaviour that instakills (Fire spitting, and Tall boys who snipe you across the map) I din't find it very hard.
I only bothered with agility, blink, level1 Shadow Kill, level1 possesion.
I guess blink is the most broken thing in the game, when you get fast enough you'll be able to pick off 3-4 people with blink + stab before anyone reacts without using any other skills.
I might do another replay with ghost or/and low chaos, but its not really a way i prefer to play so i might just wait for a DLC(?).
EDIT: also i had a lot fun cracking watch towers in places where there where 20+ enemies around.
Mother fucking fire breathing thugs.
