Mount&Blade (Warband too) thread V. Knights of Calradia

The Nords have the best units in the game, if you handle them properly. When facing cavalry like Knights, have them stay clumped together. When facing Horse-Archers, have them spread out, so you can counter-charge and surround them.
Nord Archers, though they lack the power of Sarranid or Vaegirs, and have no crossbows, are still invaluable to assisting in defending castles.
If you play on normal nords can be absolutely raped by swadian cavalry. Fighting in woods, rocky areas and mountains is probably the best way to deal with cavalry. Diverting the charge yourself can also be effective, making most of the enemy cav follow you and your horse.
I play with like the max difficulty, on foot as well.
So I just found an army of over three thousand deserter Swadian Sergeants. I don't know what to do.
Also, I noticed there's an upgrade tree for "Freelancers" in Floris, how do I recruit those troops?

Taverns, i think.
Taverns, i think.
Oh there's a Floris Wiki, good to know.
Apparently there is a guy called Sigmund that has Freelancers, but I just visited every tavern in the realm and no luck. Maybe he's not constant or something.
Oh, guess I'm outdated or something. Alright then.
It is just me or are Floris really hard? I bet I was able to free that girl that was taken by 46 bandits with 36 peasants before. Now those bandits beat the shit out of anything.
Also, the Nords are taking over the entire world it seems.
Holy crap, Nords are at war with the Vaegirs. I keep finding and joining battles to support my Nord masters.
Because of this, I am now carting around four captive Boyars.
They must be shit ones though, because nobody seems to want to pay the ransom.
playing on realistic really is a kick in the balls. being a vassal with no castle (I could be souja boy with these rhymes) I can't save all my veterans and huscarls and they got slaughtered in another battle.
How do you play the nords? I usually find myself completely fucked over without cavalry. And as a horse archer I could easily take on about 20 nord infantry (can't remember the specific class) alone.
Always lure enemies into forest battles when playing nords. If you're playing a mod with polished landscapes, this goes double.
Most of the cavalry will get stopped up in thickets of foliage, then you can charge your veterans/huscarls in and they'll cut everything to ribbons.
Serving the nords I've already wiped out three kingdoms. It irks me that I have to march all the way back to my capital to get some real troops and not some dirty mongols or sand monkeys.
Khergit Lancers, Sarranid Gaurds, bam.
Khergit lancers aren't quite as good as knights, but they are a third tier troop so you can train them really quickly.
Sarranid gaurds are pretty shit in melee, but they throw Jarrids like nobody's business. Nothing like a hail of Jarrids to wipe out enemy cavalry.
If you intend to take over calradia you'll need to mix troops, each faction has it's own strengths but you need to combine various troop types if taking everything is gonna be feasible (rhodok sharpshooters, vaegir marksmen, swadian knights, nord huscarls, khergit lancers, sarranid guards/master archers)
10k Denars for the first time, just picked this up two hours ago. My party consists mostly of swordsman. About 10 trained swordsman, 5 recruits and the rest are Calvary.

vassals are cunts
I say this like every second page, but take that 10k denars (maybe make a bit more money), talk to the guild master in rivacheg and invest in a dyeworks.
It'll pay out like 1000-2000 denars a week and that'll basically cover all your troop costs most of the time.
A village in Fire and Sword just payed me 1,500,000 (denars?).
It's Thaler, but... 1.5mil? Jesus, when did villagers get so rich?
Them villagers are probably forming worker unions :v:

That's probably almost enough to buy a decent set of armor

Buy armour? Christ, I don't think my guy has ever worn something that he didn't previously stab.
I managed to buy a set of half armor in wf&s after raiding like... 15 villages.

My armor was made out of the blood of peasants

this is usually what I do.
also, this lord like "come help me fight an army 5 times the size of mine"
no thanks
It's Thaler, but... 1.5mil? Jesus, when did villagers get so rich?
I almost laid an egg when it happened. I'd even go so far to say that it was even more than 1.5 mil, considering I had about 100,000 when it happened, and now I have 1,700,000, even after commissioning a suit of Black Armor.
Take over everything for yourself, fuck the storyline, you've (legitimately) got the money for it. Deck out all your companions with the best weaponry, horses and armor. Get all their trainers stats up, then amass a ridiculous army of winged hussars and sharpshooters and take over everything.
Swadian Knights are pretty much fucked if you get them to run straight into a wall of angry Norsemen.
The key to norse infantry is having a lot of them and keeping them all together as close as possible. Maybe a few archers to deal with those Horse fuckers..I mean Kherghit.
The "problem" with horsemen in m&b is that the game doesn't take into account the crushing power of a horse running you down for balance reasons, this way just running some armored knights into any infantary group would result in instant victory (even though it might be more realistic).

still, all knight armys are ungodly op.

I think that's one of the things I love about 1257.
Similarly, running cavarly headlong into pikemen will kill the cavalry just as quickly.
The horses in 1257 are still pretty crap. And they have that awful "braced spear" mechanic where your horses insta-dies if you brush up against a soldiers spear.
But there's a lot more cavalry in 1257 in general, which is bit more realistic. They also have the lance-breaking mechanic so the first cavalry charge is always devastating, then the cav switch to swords.
Any suggestions on decreasing loading times on 1257? It takes me up to 15 seconds to leave the menu screen of a village.
I really hate horse arches in that mod though. You'll always have like one turkish horse archer who circles around your archer formation, and your AI archers are retards and don't lead their targets, so they expend all their arrows by not leading the horse and just miss every shot, while the horse archer basically gets free kills.

You could try toggling "load textures on demand" in the game launcher

I wish there was a mod that made them even more OP but also more expensive, they're nobility after all :v:, really you'd probably need an improportionately larger amount of infantary with pikes to stop a cavalry charge or firearms.
If it was done to medieval pricing, one knight would cost more than a few dozen peasant infantry just based on his armour, and a few dozen more for his horse. Hell, a man at arms would be worth a dozen peasant infantry based on price of equipment + upkeep.
There are cases where a suit of armour was essentially worth a hamlet and the taxes that come with it.
Knights in full plate were basically tanks, though if we were going for realism, the unit types are all wrong, especially equipment wise.
In 1257, Cavalry refuses to be of any use when I'm attacking someone. I always get set up in a hilly place or a forest. The few times I'm allowed to fight in the open, the enemy has crap-tons of spear-men, so I have to dismount them before I attack, exposing them to the inevitable bowmen.
Whee! I just got my first ever village to rule!
It's called Maven or some shit and it's just on the edge of Bumble-fuck nowhere. Y'know, on the borders on that strange land where they use huge armies to repeatedly attack small, quaint villages rather than castles.
And then, "Kind Ragnar has decided to give the fiefdom of richery-mc-bollock-town to...Ragnar."
Dear God, I would murder you if you weren't so sodding powerful...
