Mount&Blade (Warband too) thread V. Knights of Calradia

I know how to edit characters, I meant specifically editing my army, as in the types and numbers of troops.
While I agree, I think he has Warband already. So he's asking if the M&B-only mods are worth it.
The answer is in my option yes. Last Days of the third age is a really awesome mod.

All of my what.
Probably a huge army joined on their side and they ended up getting some of the prisoners.
Clearly they're just complete and total badasses.
The harvest went bad so they try to get into slave trading. Do not fuck with the Peasant Women.
I was riding along in Rhodok territory, pretty sure I had beat back most of their armies.
Suddenly, about 4 lords and 800 trained soldiers later, I somehow won for the most part with a mere 120.
Yeah, I've had that fight before. The limit on fielded troops is really beneficial in those fights.

I'm getting a little tired of native Warband and looking for a good mod to play, what do you guys think the best one is?
Also, what's your opinions on Brytenwalda?
Prophecy of Pendor is good but it can be hard in ways. A lot of the troops are artificially difficult by being massively leveled, but overall it's really fun.
Brytenwalda has a really tough learning curve.
[editline]13th November 2012[/editline]
It's good and is a really well put together mod, it's just hard to start up and get adjusted to the changes and such.
After playing a few more M&B mods, Brytenwalda feels sort of sloppy to be honest. I really like the idea of a dark age combat game and the style of the mod is awesome, but brytenwalda's content quality ranges from astounding to awful, there's tonnes of unused armor models in the game that consume assloads of system memory, the .BRF files are really badly optimized and make battle scenes run poorly when the game tries to load resources. The combat is unbalanced and greatly biased in favor of hatchet/axe-wielding troops, everything else is shit and knife/spear-wielding troops are utterly useless. You can have the best set of armor in the game, and a single hit from a naked, hatchet-wielding bandit will easily remove half your health.
Cavalry is OP for the wrong reasons, horses move at like 70 km/ph and will literally die if they so much as brush up against a tiny spear, yet it's almost impossible to play infantry in a battle because these rocket-powered horsemen will almost always spear you in the back for a one hit kill. The tournaments are totally broken, your enemies will throw javelins that can literally strike you in the face from 150 meters away, and if you survive that shit then you need to have a spear fight with a bot that will almost always chamber block any spear thrust you make and will somehow deliver 60+ damage with his inevitable blow.
If all that isn't enough, the javelins in battles are fucking nuts. They can be thrown 150+ meters, javelin-wielding troops will literally rain volleys of javelins from hundreds of meters away, the javelin velocity is almost identical to the speed of arrows/crossbow bolts and they totally obliterate shields, to boot. You'll have a Deaisbard standing right in front of you and he'll just start fucking hucking horsemens javelins at you from shear point blank, that will obliterate your reinforced round shield in two hits, right before he puts a javelin through your face.
What I described is essentially the entire gameplay experience, which is a shame because the mod is genuinely really cool... the gameplay is just badly executed and the mod is highly unoptimized.
Lately I haven't had much trouble with Brytenwalda.
Tournaments have an option to change their difficulty. Expert mode is ON by default. Turning it off does not affect your chances of winning prizes.
I always try to find cover, whether it be the stairs in the circular arenas, a rock, a tree, to survive a tournament. If there are other people on my team I have them near me to absorb any thrown javelins. If not, it's a matter of moving in and out to get them to waste the javelins.
Fighting with spears is an art. You can't just click like with a sword. What I do is I move my character back and look to the right while holding down the mouse button to ready the spear, then, all in one motion, I step forward, look toward my target, and release the mouse button to deliver an effective stab. Essentially, you have to use your entire body to thrust a spear. In battle, this can be done repeatedly to a distracted enemy force to skewer many troops before you are noticed.
If that's too complicated, you can always put away your shield and bash your opponent over the head with the spear.
The combat is designed to be centered solely on infantry. Don't even bother with cavalry and archers in the late game. The only people who should be on horses are you and your companions.
I always go into battle with a long spear to take down cavalry, a 2h weapon to take down infantry, and a sword and shield when I need to be careful.
The Reinforced Celtic Round Shield with a Shield skill of 3 can take a few javelins pretty well. If javelins are such a big problem, then don't get by them. Stick behind some of your troops. Stay with the group. This will also eliminate the possibility of getting surprised by cavalry. They'll get caught in the mass of your troops and destroyed.
Although axes do cause you to stagger even when you're in full armor, it works both ways. When my troops engage the main enemy force, I dismount and use my 2h axe to just annihilate the sides of the enemy's force.
The long spear is fun to use when fighting Caravans. I have my troops stay put while I run ahead to solo the one Caravan Master who comes charging over the hill.
I already know that stuff, I've logged a lot of hours onto it. That's the problem though, you need to follow a multi-paragraph scientific formula just to enjoy the game. 1257 is more up my alley and I'm playing that instead. It's pretty challenging, but at the same time it's it's sensible and realistic while the frustration level is pretty low.
Hm, are there any good mods in popular fictional worlds for Warband like that Lord of the Rings one for vanilla Mount and Blade?
Historical ones are nice too. I'm really looking for any good mod with extra features to clean up some of the game's annoying factors and make the experience feel fresh. More recommendations?
The only fantasy one I can think of is Prophesy of Pendor.
The ones I recommend are Brytenwalda if you're looking for a big challenge or Europe 1200.

Where historical mods are concerned, keep your eyes out on the horizon for L'Aigle. It's basically going to be Warband's version of Napoleonic Wars with a proper singleplayer campaign.
I have played vanilla warband (well, with diplomacy) for about 50 hours now, I am fairly experienced with the vanilla game, now I am debating whether or not to get Prophecy Of Pendor. All I know is it changes a lot and I think is quite hard. Can anyone tell me about it / convince me its good?
Also FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GIVE US INFO ABOUT M&B 2!

Self plug, but I'm working on my TES mod still.
Will be a while before the first release though.
So I just started playing this. I made a character after a popular historical figure named Luís de Camões who was a warrior and a bard famed for bar fighting, composing badass poems and fucking courtisans.
Clearly i was ready to court the fuck out of some swadian bitches. I get this bitch who's always in her underwear and gets progressively blacker as I approach her even though her portrait is white. i approach her in a feast after everyone else shooting me down. I do the "I'm an admirer" line and the bitch goes from 0 to 8. I keep seeing her and throwing poems at her until she tells me she wanst a future with me and bam, she tells me she's engaged to Count Assface.
Clearly, this shit won't roll. I challenge him to a duel even though he apparently has courted her for his entire life.
i easily win and stroll right back to my waiting maiden. My influence goes from 21 to 19. The bitch actually preferred him.
That poor bastard's diary was probably the earliest recorded beta story in history.

That bitch wasn't worth it anyways. You could've done better, and any other time you have to deal with a dickface Count like that, you don't hesitate to fuck them up. You gotta be alpha as fuck!

Yeah, would love something like that. Looks great!
Anyway, what about 1257AD? Or Eagle and the Radiant Cross? I'm basically looking for the highest quality mod, I can accept peculiarities, I just want a fresh and fun experience, with a well polished mod. I very much like historical settings like 1257 or Brytenwalda, or pre-established fictional settings like the various Lord of the Rings conversions. Are there and Lord of the Rings ones for Warband yet?
1257 is excellent, but I'd wait for the .exe. of the next version. It's supposed to be released "next thursday" which basically mean plans are on the table to get a release out. The SVN version is a pain to install.
The .95 release (or whatever it was) is pretty crappy in comparison to the newer svn versions.

Installing the svn version was no pain at all for me. Tortoise, done.
Also how often is it updated? I installed it months ago.
1257 is good. mostly because i like the feature that lets you continue playing after you die. (as a soldier of yours)
The one thing that I fucking hate about 1257, is how it deals with numbers. I'd be able to make a defense and deal tons of damage, if they didnt spawn 120 for them and 25 for me in a 130 vs 400 battle.

I started out as a welsh vassal and moved around after I had my basic army set up. I have an army with a focus on shieldwall for infantry in the initial stage, skirmishing for cavalry, and mass projection of fire through a line of longbowmen. I myself made my character an archer and am mainly focused on using the longbow, with light horse and sword for the counter attack.
But yeah. Fucking welsh longbowmen and longbows. If you keep them protected and deploy large numbers, you kill everything.

It's a pain because it has to download off a slow server and takes ages. It's updated pretty frequently iirc, but mostly bugfixes/tweaks.

I get Genoese Crossbowmen and Saethyyds. The crossbowmen are pretty awesome at range (not as good as the welsh archers) but the Genoese Crossbowmen rock people's shit in melee combat so they can protect the archers if infantry/cavalry get too close.
Latin light infantry are another gem if you can recruit some, despite the name, they are basically a skirmishing archer unit. Those guys are terrifying. I was fighting against one of the Italian factions and during a battle this big line of inconspicuous-looking infantry slowly started flanking us, then suddenly there was this fucking biblical rain of javelins that just decimated all my guisarmers and injured most of my archers and crossbowmen

I like how that thread has essentially turned into a lore discussion.
So I just made the Nords stop warring with me and I become a vassal of them.
Reason? I need some Nord Huscarls. All I have is archers.
1257 has my home town in it....so many restarts to get it awarded when i joined england, but worth it
