Coal should be the most common "ore"...
In other words, dig. In rock. For what should be a relatively short time. OR look for surface coal, also around rock.
Why is red stuff thermite? You can't mine thermite, that doesn't make sense. I've heard people calling it copper though, which I guess makes more sense.

It's not thermite, first it was called red ore/powder, then some guys who can't read previous pages said it's thermite, then some other guy found an actually scientific name for it, but I forgot what and who.
So call it what you want, since Notch didn't name it.
Let's call it copper now...well red powdery copper.
