I finally got cuprite/copper/thermite/red stuff when I changed the stone texture to have a window, made shit 10x easier to find caves, I also accidently used an old texture so the ore was the purple box.
I only done this because the cave I was in was fully searched out.

Find a cave system, use the transparent rock thing with the texture and look for black blobs underground then dig to them.

I mine a lot and can't stand not having light, so that is the most important use for me at the moment.
Out of curiosity, what else is there? In the valley/bowl I am in I can see 2 or more veins of it on the walls.

coal is the best fuel source (furnace) and can smelt/cook 8 blocks per coal

The water doesn't flow out in amounts enough to do so, it is a deep bowl.
Every time I opened the door it would flood, unless I had an access tunnel from the outside.
