Can i have an invite to the oceanic 2 region that just started? Origin name: Hendo-AU
Okay, I bought the game. Now I just need to get home.
You guys don't seem to be jumping on the hate bandwagon so I guess I'll get a reasonable answer here.
I really like the SimCity games, but have heard bad things about about the possibility of EA turning the servers off in a few years time. How valid is this statement?
Also, from your screenshots the regions seem really small compared to SimCity 3000. Was this one of the things they temporarily changed to lighten server load or will it always be small?
Thaaanks <3 :)

They won't turn off the servers just like that. The game is built around online.
Yes the cities are small.

I have 40K people with no parks.

Is there in-game region chat?

Yea, a bit small but it works.

Cities will always be small. The game seems to be balanced around optimalisation, not size.
Maybe sometime in the future they'll make some kind of expansion DLC with larger city plots. Who knows.

I type messages in there a lot, but I rarely ever get a response, and most of the time I don't even see my own messages.
I play the game with a couple of friends, and we use skype to chat while play. Maybe Facepunch regions could use teamspeak on a public server or something?

I have to tap next to the icons before they show up. Otherwise I'll just hit a random rating. Like dumb, for example. :v:
Anyone got good starting-up advice? I made a city that was doing okay-ish but then it sort-of hit a plateau. I haven't gotten as far as seeing any tall buildings and such show up, I feel like I'm not getting off to a great start with my cities.
I end up devolving in to what I'd do in AoE II, sandbox mode and just fuck around with everything. Which is fun, for a while, before I want a challenge again.
I've never played a SimCity game and yesterday I thought "why not" and bought it. I have to say the game is far more addicting than I thought. I started out with a couple of streets and a city hall, gave it over to my girlfriend, and she played for a good 4 hours straight while I just sat there and watched her. Even watching people play is exciting
there's a hazmat fire in my city but i can't do anything about it because i don't have enough students at my uni to build an engineering block
is there still hope or is my city lost
Absolutely wonderful video on building roads properly (thanks to elite3444, i don't know your fp name):

You still have hope. I've had one firetruck put out a hazmat fire and save my ass. (wasn't a hazmat truck, obv)

It really depends on what kind of ceiling you're hitting.
For me the problem is always too much traffic clogging up roads.
I don't really know what my ceiling was per se, I just know I was hitting one in that nothing much was happening, mostly because I don't know what to do and/or what's best to do in a general sense for cities. What's a good solid base for a city? What's good to focus on? How can I get a good starting income, etc?
Game is installing!

The main advice I can think of is to plan ahead.
You need to have a basic plan before you start building. Decide the general area of your residential area and your industry area, and place some commercial zones in your residential area for the sims to shop in. The road network is very important as well. You need high density roads and avenues to increase the size of buildings, but connecting these together results in traffic lights, which results in traffic jams. You really need to keep the amount of traffic lights to a minimum, otherwise when population hits 200.000 or more, your city gets cloged up and dies due to your services being stuck in a traffic jam 24/7.
Control where medium/wealthy citizens live by raising up the land value with parks ($=poor, $$=medium,$$$=wealthy).
The game looks really simple when you start for the first time, but the problem isn't really starting a town, it is growing a town to a large size while trying to juggle problems stemming from issues you failed to fix/recognize in the earlier stages.
Repetition is the key. Build towns until they die, note what killed the town and then build a new town that fixes that problem (and then eventually dies to another problem).

Yeah I posted this in the last thread too. SweFox, add to the OP for maximum exposure pls.
What's a good way to combat germs? They keep complaining about them and I have a large hospital and the ground isn't that polluted.
Also even with a large streetcar avenue, there's so much traffic! What do?
Okay, doing the tutorial now. Origin name is "LeFreakie", SweFox.
