I have an HT Omega Clario+, does this apply to me?
I recommend updating OpenAL first.
Rename both OpenAL32.dll and OpenAL64.dll to something like OpenALxx_old.dll
Then copy in your new OpenAL32.dll from system32.
Works in 64 bit too. It's really a huge improvement. There's directional sound in minecraft usually but with this, I can hear exactly where the sound is coming from with my headphones.
Unfortunately I'm finding it unplayable like this. You can barely hear the popping noise of a pickup, and when you strafe sideways it sounds incredibly wierd. Switching back to the old DLL.
Are there any Mac and Linux users who can test this?
Sounds much better.
I'd love to try this, but any time I enable sound on my minecraft, shortly after it crashes. Always. If you want to help me with that problem then please do. I already tried setting fog the the highest, and my graphics are on fast not fancy. I'm thinking minecraft doesn't like 64-bit or something, not sure though.

I actually think doing this will fix the crashing on 64-bit systems, another reason to try!
you can try replacing the OpenAL64.dll with the one in the lwjgl 2.7.1 release too, I've done that. Not noticed any difference doing so, but it's over double the filesize of the current one minecraft provides and might just help.
That used to happen to me.
Delete .minecraft on %appdata% before an update comes out (don't apply it before doing this), and then open the game.
Wow this worked, thank you.

What version is the one from your system? It should display in properties.
On my laptop I notice a slight difference. Instead of audio have confusing sources (directions) I can actually tell where they are coming from a lot better now.

Yes but it also makes the footsteps sound stupid and the pickup pops extremely quiet...

The version number was blank in the extended information, I'm afraid.
I noticed that if I use my surround sound system then change my device to my headset it has the surround sound thing going on.
It does use it but only on devices it is supposed to use it for.
cool

For me they sound the same except that whichever way I move, the footsteps drift off in the opposite direction
I guess that is kinda stupid actually
