Gordon Freeman is an educated adult thrown into extraordinary scenarios. He takes care of these with a crowbar.
And for all of you posting Master Chief, I actually love the sci-fi story of the Halo universe, and Master Chief fits into his role there.

I dislike it when it's just for the sake of it.
I would say both Gordan and the MC fit this category well.
I mean when you come down to it Gordon is really just a super smart scientist tough guy with guns that solves all those simple physics puzzles for the good guys.

Well, compared to most of today's 13-year old wet dreams, he's pretty tame in most perspectives, although he did get a change in appearance he's still got that "kid's cartoon character" design. Plus just about every other character in his series is more hardcore than he is.
He seems more like a gateway character to kids who are just about that "I only play hardcore games" stage than a character that one would like in that stage, one that a 12-year old would love and the deny ever liking only a year later.
The people who seem to pay the most attention to him are the "Go back to the 2D sonic, Sega!" crowd.
