1. Get WinRAR
2. Go to "C:\Users\<your account>\AppData(hidden folder)\Roaming\.minecraft\bin"
3. Open "minecraft.jar" with WinRAR

5. Extract all png/gif files in there, as well as the folders:
"armor"
"art"
"gui"
"item"
"misc"
"mob"
"terrain"
to the folder you created.
6. Edit them and save.
7. Drag and drop everything from your "Minecraft Textures" folder back into the jar file that is opened with WinRAR (following the same folder structure) and let them replace the others.
8. Play and enjoy :D

I found almost 30 iron in a cave, plus an old outpost I had during a stream. I'm going to smelt it on-site and to make another iron pickaxe.

I'm making a realistic high res (32p) pack, I'm guessing the other guy is just retiling them so that it fits 4x the same texture into the space of one.
