Last friday update, I called that it would be under two weeks before someone emulated an electronic device in minecraft using wires and torches.
It didn't even take 5 days.
Edit: The race is on, I say that before the end of next year we'll be able to play minecraft on a digital computer built in minecraft.

This could work too.
I wonder if in survival multiplayer, you could gather enough track and materials to continuously keep going on infinite maps? Just go in a straight line through whatever comes at you, like one person lays the track, another lays a torch every 6 blocks, another flattens the land with shovels another with pick axes and another with an axe for trees, then lots more people work together to deliver more track, food, shovels and other stuff.

It couldn't possible be alot of more work on SMP. He already have the stuff fixed as in creative multiplayer, he just needs to adapt and tweak stuff.
