Also, what exactly did Notch do to the dust? Like, I get what he did, but what [b]exactly[/b] did it cause? I only used it to set of dynamite from afar and set traps and such. Nothing crazy, so I don't care if he took away the more complex stuff.

Dust can't get trampled. Red torches no longer power blocks - instead they only power objects & dust.
AKA he broke all the logic gate designs (slightly) to make it easier to use. It shouldn't make much of a difference for detonating dynamite.

E-torches now power the block above it, which makes them more usefull for underground wiring (place one under a block with a door on it and it controls the door) also you now can create vertical wire by placing multiple inverters on top of each other, like
e-torch
block

etc.
