Wow, now we have something like 3 Metro 2033 threads at one time. But at least this one has the most info and most up to date info of them all.
I'm going to be getting this game for Xbox 360 only because my Laptop is below minimum spec and I don't have the cash to shell out for an upgrade. To bad it's pretty linear compared to STALKER. From my understanding the game plays out more like Half-Life 2 than STALKER, in that its a pretty scripted, linear game with one defined path. Still looks amazing though.

For all I know, this game can be linear, but then after the story you could be free to do whatever you want.
One other thing I forgot to mention, there is a good/evil system setup. Your actions ultimately determine how people will act toward you and I recon that side missions might will be available as a result.

But how would you be free? There are set levels with loading points on each end (like how HL2 and a lot of other games does it) and within those levels there are several points of no return. Unless you're talking about something like a New game+ option where you can start from the beginning with the equipment you finished with I just don't see how any form of "Free play" or whatever would work in this game. It'd be like completing HL2 and then after the credits role being able to run around the top of the citadel; while kinda interesting for 5 minutes it's utterly pointless.
Also, look at the gameplay videos on Gametrailers for why I don't think a Free mode would work:

Pre war bullets are currency, meaning it is military grade munitions that has increased firepower and accuracy, as opposed to the makeshift ammo that is less reliable.

Actually its any ammo that's currency, its just some are more valuable than others. Like you said, pre-war bullets are the best, worth the equivalent of $20-30 depending on the type while makeshift and reloaded rounds are like $1-5 depending on the type.
Are there any swords? Swords are bad ass, and more reliable than a gun using makeshift bullets. Unless guns just work no matter what, which would be kind of silly, but hey, it is a game.

I'm trying to concentrate on studying. It's hard work and I don't want to waste the free time I got to work. And getting any work is pretty hard because of the recession, also a guy at my age can't go to any job. The only money I get is my allowance and if I get the chance to work somewhere I wouldn't get much money out of it. Let's stop this derailing now.

I hate this. I don't know if I should get this for PC or not. I also don't know if I should get JC2 for PC or not.
FFFF I hate this. With a console I'm promised it will work no matter what. with computer, there is a chance something will go horribly wrong and I can't play and I'd waste all that money, but it also comes with the promise of trainers.

It does, i was watching a dev walkthrough and the smg he had was using iron sights while he slaughtered one of the metro's communities.
