This reminds me of the Facepunch Riddle Challenge back in august.
Also, leave it to Valve to do something this awesome. I've seen viral marketing before, but never as elaberate as setting up PPP dial-up servers intended to be connected to.
This is some freaky fuck'd up shit already.
I wonder how everyone would react if the final message was "you just lost the game"
I wonder how everyone would react if the final message was "you just lost the game"
There'd be a Steam group called "VALVE VIRAL MARKETING BOYCOTT" up within seconds.
Where the fuck am I supposed to get a dial-up modem at this time in the morning? [editline]07:31AM[/editline] Sheesh.
So i was hunting around in the Source SDK, and model viewer turned up this. Most likely it's just the implementation of how they play the sounds, but perhaps someone with more modding experience with me could shed some light?

Can someone update me with whats happened since page 26? all i remember is sstv images of the dino sounds.
Someone who's near the valve HQ should tune into 85.2 on a radio and see what plays

It means that the mappers only have to add like 2 entities per radio to get the system to work instead of requiring like 6.
Can someone update me with whats happened since page 26? all i remember is sstv images of the dino sounds.
The synopsis from Steam Forum
-Portal gets surprise update yesterday afternoon -People see new mystery achievement -People play and see the radio in the beginning room now has a green light -Carry it around and notice it makes strange broadcast interference noises in certain places -Locate and place all 26 of these mystery radios for achievement -Smart people yank wav files out of game content folders and run them through steganography programs -Produces 26 weird cryptic image files in a numbered sequence -Some dude runs the number string through an md5 hash translator and gets a landline number -Internet traces it to Kirkland, WA (near Valve HQ) -People find out its not a phone/fax line but a data line hosting a BBS and telnet it -Use a clue from one of the files to figure out the BBS user/password login info -End up with a bunch of weird ASCII artwork -A collection of the ASCII artwork is posted: http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6278/portalascii.png -People get to work on the ASCII and an ingame screenshot may very well have been found by turning one of the ASCII artworks: http://cdupload.com/files/123623_btxvo/rotate1.jpg -Speculation on another ASCII image, showing 2 robot like creatures starts. http://img706.yfrog.com/i/android.png/ Some believe they are connected, whilest other dispute it, claiming it shows the skeleton of a chicken and therefor they are not connected. Others speculate that this may be Combine Super Soldiers. (http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/File:Super_soldier.jpg and http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/File...er_Soldier.jpg) -Another new collection of ASCII is posted here: http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/930...sciilarge2.png and a blurred version is posted here: http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9...ortalascii.png
There have been other little discoveries but I think that still covers the major ones
In case anyone doesn't know this already: WAVE WITH LINKS ETC. https://wave.google.com/wave/?pli=1#minimized:search,restored:wave:googlewave.com!w%252BWICUVG8AA [editline]02:40PM[/editline] And this is their WIKI FOR THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE GOOGLE WAVE http://pugsoft.info/radio/index.php?title=Main_Page
It's just how they did the sounds. It means that the mappers only have to add like 2 entities per radio to get the system to work instead of requiring like 6.
Thats what i thought, only i've been unable to find any sort of trigger in hammer. More stuff, dunno if it means anything : http://filesmelt.com/dl/7411.jpg
Not near Valve HQ, find what plays on that frequency at the location that was decrypted.
Yeah, what this guy says. Also, is that your avatar from Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas?
Look at the top right. Glados was last worked on in 1997. Assuming HL1 took place in 1998, could this mean that Portal and Half Life 1 take place at the EXACT same time?
Half-Life took place in 200x.
Also, leave it to Valve to do something this awesome. I've seen viral marketing before, but never as elaberate as setting up PPP dial-up servers intended to be connected to.
That's just it, THAT IS VIRAL MARKETING. At least, what it should be...
Half-Life took place in 200x.
Yes, but we don't know how long it was between the last time GLaDOS was worked on and the events of portal. Given the state of the test chambers, it could have been any amount of time - even enough to line up the events of Half-life.
That's just it, THAT IS VIRAL MARKETING. At least, what it should be...
viral marketing for smart people [sp]nerds with lots of free time[/sp]
Yeah, what this guy says. Also, is that your avatar from Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas?
I removed what I said because I realised it's quite close to Valve HQ anyway. And yes, it is from Fear and Loathing.
Half-Life took place in 200x.
And seeing as those scientists in aperture science were saying something about working with 20 year old equipment, that seems it takes place 20 years (or something like that) after halflife, just like Half-Life 2. Pretty much the reason GLaDOS warns you about "Whats out there" since by that time Gordon hasn't arrived yet and the combine are in full strength.
Half-Life took place in 200x.
I thought it was around 2016?
I removed what I said because I realised it's quite close to Valve HQ anyway. And yes, it is from Fear and Loathing.
awesome movie :buddy:
I thought it was around 2016?
Nope.
I thought it was around 2016?
I don't know where you got that idea. There is a calender that says 200x on it (the last number is unreadable).
I don't know where you got that idea. There is a calender that says 200x on it (the last number is unreadable).
That, and the combine haven't been on earth for that long. The war only lasted a few hours.
Known possibilites: Portal takes place at the EXACT SAME TIME as HL1 Glados is in fact Still Alive and has been teleported to (or always was at) the Borealis Some of the images may be from security footage in Glados’ systems, such as the door in ruins Aperture Science grew genetically modified humans and examined them in closed environments The “androids” in the photos are possibly genetically modified humans The last image could possibly the Citadel in ruins
Apparently the Resonance Cascade took place in 2000, http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/timeline.htm
Also, from Wikipedia:
In Half-Life 2, the story resumes an indeterminate number of years after the Black Mesa incident

I thought it was around 2016?
That's Modern Warfare 2
