TBH it was very low res,and made by Turtle Rock, Valve took it up and made it even better.

The problem with it was that the game takes place 2 weeks after the infection and the survivors were kitted out like it had been months.
Or at least that's the explanation that I remember being given.

Also, since they were so dirty and grimy, players easily mistook them for zombies when things got hectic. Thus they were remade to look cleaner and more distinct from the horde
