I usually do ok with the IL2. It's slow and big but it has good firepower and is agile enough to give most fighters a run for their money. Head on you will beat most fighters around your tier, and because it's slow most unexperienced pilots have trouble staying on its tail and overshoot. It also has big rockets that can do serious damage to groundtargets and enemies. Just don't carry bombs with you, because then it becomes nearly unflyable.
I prefer the Russians myself, the Yaks are great, cannons start at tier3 and the 9t is ridiculously good. They're also cheap to repair.

It's kind of wrong.. but i was picking because of what i knew about history, rather than the game.
Germany (and to some a lesser extent Britain) Would try to Create expensive but superior technology.
Russia was famous for their tanks, not their planes.
Americans/ japs would mass produce cheap but inferior vehicles.

I think I'm getting used to this game. The Starter planes aren't so bad, but sometimes it feels like I'm tickling people rather than shooting them.

american tanks were Shit in comparison to German tanks. The Germans really wanted to make things bigger and better and more advanced (Inventing jet fighters, V2 rockets, using tiger tanks and having an aweful amount of super weapon projects like rail guns and tanks the size of battleships)...

The M4 Sherman was one of the most revolutionary tanks in its time. Not to mention that the USSR based their T-34 off of US interwar tank designs.
It was the first vehicle to implement a gyro to help the gun stay still while moving making it incredibly mobile and allowing it to fire on the move.
Even the German Panzer IV while somewhat comparable to the Sherman had terrible designs that made it difficult to manufacture. Almost every German tank that was made during the war was plagued with mechanical failures and malfunctions (that's what you also get when you have oppressed, pissed off slave labor making your weapons.) The ME262 was the shittiest wunderwaffe to have ever came to fruition, its fuel efficiency was horrible and pilots could barely engage US bombers for little more than minutes before they're back on fumes.
The Japanese 'Zero' fighter was also well known to be one of the best fighters of its time, being able to outperform everything that the US had.
It's just hitler pressed for bigger designs and they were often rushed into action and had many bugs and faults in them.

The Tiger had a great reputation, but like many of the other German weapons it was expensive, hard to make and had bad mobility. I bet there's some instances where the Germans were just better off placing a FlaK 88 in lieu of a Tiger.
