Get up to that gravel, take some out, put a workbench there and make yourself some stone tools and some ladders, then keep digging down.
Punch through rocks while angrily muttering to yourself.
build a tool bench in your inventory, jump and place it under you. Block off the mineshaft you dug, you live underground now.
