So far what I've seen in action of Arma 3's particles, they are pretty meh compared to other games. They aren't [I]bad[/I], just nothing special. I think people are expecting ArmA 3 to have hollywood style explosions. Because those totally fit in a military sim.
Got an enhanced weapons mod for 2k4. The reskins are terrible, but I got a mod that allows me to take attacks from weapons and put them onto other weapons, so I can keep the nice particle effects from the new mod. The new shock rifle effects are my favorite, they remind me of the UT99 shock alt fire but with fancy effects. You're also failing to realize it's an alpha, it's more than likely not final.

It's an effect, then the effect is done. In Arma the effect lingers and blows away in the wind, and it obstructs your view like a bitch. If you really have an issue with it, go get Blastcore, WarFX, or any other number of client side mods to change it to your liking. I think Arma has compromised the simulator feel with added playability enough already

But even if Red Rivers effects don't last as long that doesn't mean they don't still look considerably better. They throw showers of sparks and debris, and actually feel like they have impact when the go off. And yea, the Blastcore mods are considerably nicer looking, but the particles still feel fairly rigid when compared to other modern games, which makes it seem like Arma's effect editor just has a really limited capabilities.

I see sparks and debris all the time when vehicles explode.

Thing is, these guys are at least 100 meters away from the explosion and, despite that, one guy is ALMOST hit by a piece of shrapnel going fast enough to pierce his armor.
