in today's world there are many image to ASCII programs - back in the day I'm pretty sure all ASCII art was done by hand and was pretty much the format for pictures (raw pictures didn't exist in the digital world). think back to commodore 64 and 386/486 computers.
you have to keep in mind though that this isn't actually taking place when BBS was in it's heyday. It's taking place in the current technological era, so whoever may be transmitting the images probably WOULD have access to a converter of some kind.
I think they're probably going to have the progress bar hop back and forth so that they can line up 100% with the 11th.
but don't you have to use some kind of "image to ASCII" program or whatnot or does the BBS do that itself when sending it? unless the BBS does it my question still stands?
pssst glados isnt real
If you pass your noise filters (and some frequency filters) over the dinosaur noise stereofile, you get this: http://www.mediafire.com/file/mn5tmnztnno/dinosaur_noise_1.ogg http://www.mediafire.com/file/ymmjziujkhz/dinosaur_noise_2.ogg Made off of the track featured in the lower half of that stereo channel:
Sorry but I think this is pointless.
I think they're probably going to have the progress bar hop back and forth so that they can line up 100% with the 11th.
I doubt they'd let it go that long without a considerable event occurring. That leaves several days of dead time, and I think they'd lose the buzz they've generated, which I'm sure they don't want to happen. I figure it'll hit 100% right about 9am Valve time tomorrow, and we'll have something pretty big happen then. It's going to be interesting though, to see if the 11th really is their target date, and if it is, whether or not they can keep the hype up between now and then.
Sorry but I think this is pointless.
I agree, but I did it on request. The only worthwhile thing would be to isolate the voices, but the way the frequencies are full of buzz, it's next to impossible.

Another thing is that if they do some kind of update tomorrow we can pretty much assume that they're doing an update every other day.
I agree, but I did it on request. We're just waiting for that bar, and hoping for something else to happen in the mean time.
GLaDOS does not "see" ASCII. She doesn't see anything. Most likely whatever robot her AI was occupying would have multiple types of cameras used to detect and analyze its surroundings. GLaDOS would just receive data from the cameras and interpret the data as she was programmed to. If you really want to get this detailed about the fiction, the most likely scenario is that she would take a photo with a standard still camera, and use some functionality she either had in the first place or acquired later (see: AI) to convert the image to strings of characters. That being said, I think this is getting too deep into parts of the fiction that aren't very significant.
Maybe the images and letters in the dinosaur pictures are an MD5 coded message?
Maybe the images and letters in the dinosaur pictures are an MD5 coded message?
O.o for cereal?
This thing had better have a sick sense of humor.
This thing had better have a sick sense of humor. picture goes here.
it's been established that that status message is entirely for lulz. It said something about the ETA being "At the heat death of the Universe". I think it's probably safe to say that isn't true.
Ah I see. You never know though. I'm not giving them any rope, the damn thing was moving backwards at one point.
I think they're probably going to have the progress bar hop back and forth so that they can line up 100% with the 11th.
or, they're not planning on the 11th
seems kind of dead at 2:30am. wonder why :raise:
seems kind of dead at 2:30am. wonder why :raise:
It's only 11:34pm here. Everyone being gone is making for a boring night. [editline]11:35PM[/editline]
or, they're not planning on the 11th
Also possible.
It's only 11:34pm here. Everyone being gone is making for a boring night. [editline]11:35PM[/editline] Also possible.
agreed. I think the lack of real progress this afternoon has people thinking nothing will happen tonight.
agreed. I think the lack of real progress this afternoon has people thinking nothing will happen tonight.
suddenly, boom, portal 2 on steam for $49.99
suddenly, boom, portal 2 on steam for $49.99
I wish.
I wish.
Only if it's regular game size and long enough to make it worth $50.
suddenly, boom, portal 2 on steam for $49.99
when i realized it was a joke i died a little inside. Hopefully good things will happen in IV.
Only if it's regular game size and long enough to make it worth $50.
That's a given.
Just an FYI from the IRC. New image just came up. Looks like portal gun in right hand, and springs on the knees/feet edit: Yes, I confirmed from multiple sources and their logs that it DID move backwards for a while there. We don't know what happened, maybe some random noise Valve introduced into the system and it only updated every 15 minutes or so.
Awesome, thanks for the update.
Hard to tell... That image sort of looks like a woman...
Hard to tell... That image sort of looks like a woman...
Looks like breasts, so yeah, it's hopefully a woman.
Listen to this This is the dinosaur_noise.wav file filtered. Sounds like a radio transmission but i think that is becuse of all the noise that was added.
