The power of Hines compels you!
I've had more fun with Oblivion than with most other games, even without mods. It's a great game. :colbert:
Especially that one prison quest, where you can't let anyone see you.
Except that part was sorta bugged. The guard caught a glimpse of me and went into pursuit.
I ran back to the sewer passage and slammed the door behind me. The sewer was locked.
Meanwhile the guards forgot about me. I thought they went away, I opened the door, only to meet one right in front of me. I unsheated my sword, ready to fight, and he said
Hello, nice to see you.
and went away. I just strolled through the place while the guards didn't give a single shit. Some of them even said hi. Only part I needed to stealth was where you actually kill that one dude.
I don't remember if I got out through the sewer, on walked out by the front door while the guards smiled. Possibly the latter.

Imperial guards are nice people really, just territorial.
Lets keep the Skyrim thread for Skyrim.
Take this conversation to the Elder Scrolls thread.

They're both good games in their own respect, it's just that Oblivion was a pretty large letdown when compared to Morrowind, not just because some features seemed to be a downgrade compared to its predecessor but because they promised so much more with Oblivion, especially Radiant AI.
This is what I mean:

I've never seen any traps like that nor any so called "power crystals" in any dungeons I've sieged in this game.

Notice how much more deadly the bow is. In Oblivion today, your enemy is basically a pincushion for arrows half the time and they can keep on walking.
And this is what seems to be the most prevalent of all the letdowns:

As one can see, it's not really as much that Oblivion was worse compared to Morrowind, but that Oblivion was a large letdown compared to the hype Bethesda built.
Why the hell did they cut out all that awesome content? And please don't say consoles.
Consoles and simplifying for a larger audience. Sometimes those two go hand-in-hand.
Apparently the Radient AI also broke the game, as it would cause characters to do things that would stop the player from completing quests, such as killing essential NPC's. I'm sure consoles played a part in it, but the technology was probably a bit ahead of it's time and they weren't able to get it right for the game.
Keep in mind those E3 videos were almost definitely scripted. As for Skyrim, they'll probably get the AI to work in a much more similar manner to those videos.

How could NPCs kill unkillable 'essential' npcs?
I did hear about how if an NPC's AI routine were altered it would lead to bedlam. Beggars killing for food, causing people to kill them, causing guards to attack them, and if, god forbid, a guard accidentally hit another guard.
Also, there was a test where a def dropped the staff that would create a good, or evil version of whatever it shot at.
Beggar picked it up, shot the player. utter anarchy.

Must be fun messing around with the AI when developing.
I'm trying to keep my self nothing above cautiously optimistic for this game... being overly excited for a game makes waiting for the release date unbearable anyways.
Don't get so hyped and it'll surely be incredibly enjoyable. Just like Oblivion and Spore was great to me because I wasn't paying attention to news and trailers and stuff, so I didn't get hyped and found both enjoyable.

I've seen all those traps, minus the gas ones. I've seen those "power crystals" too, they go by a different name though and aren't usually set up as spectacularly as that one was.
That "power crystal" is a greater welkynd stone and is part of the main quest.
They were replaced with Varla stones which can be sold for an assload of money or can be used to recharge enchanted items if you're retarded.

Those things are fucking useful if you play as a pacifist.
Do you call me retarded?

Both of those traps exist in Oblivion.
Be careful with your wording there. In certain context Oblivion is worse than its predecessor, but all round its a worthy sequel, which is what I think you're trying to say. In some aspects its excels over morrowind. After all, the team did achieve their design goals in making Oblivion's environment seem less fantastic and more normalized. It really seems like a matter of preference to me. Its not like Oblivion's atmosphere was inconsistent or anything (unless you were making a stretch and expecting it to be like morrowind).
Oh yeah, I did mean to say that Oblivion is a great game in its own right. I have had at least 300 hours of fun out of both games. But I have added more gameplay changing mods to Oblivion than I did to Morrowind.
Anyway, I am not one of those who think Oblivion sucked, it just did a few things wrong. And those things where already fixed in Bethesda's next game, which leads me to believe Skyrim will be awesome.

most of these aren't due to it being dumbed down, it's just that todd howard is a master bullshitter
also those traps and power crystals are in every aleyid ruin

It's a great game, but not as timeless and original as Morrowind or Daggerfall :colbert:
Arena, Morrowind and Daggerfall all have truly amazing features that have yet to be bested by any game. Oblivion put too much emphasis on trivial game features and visuals, and they wound up missing the big picture. Great game, yes.. but not as timeless and expansive as the previous titles.

I'm sorry, I never did finish the MQ.
People mock the Radiant AI but I still prefer it to having a lot of insomniacs who do nothing but stand around town all day and don't bat an eyelid when a Dark Brotherhood assassin or an Ash zombie walks by them or starts trying to kill me.

Also, that point about the bows being "deadlier" may not be accurate since it was a demo and they wanted to quickly show thing so they may have buffed them out of convience.
Oblivion wasn't THAT bad.
It was a great game with a few major flaws.
Only thing I liked in Oblivion was the voice actor for all the male elves. He was so awesome...
Some voice mess ups.

Whenever I load up Morrowind I see "THE_UNDERGROUND_2.esp", and whenever I see that I hear "The Underground" from Labyrinth in my head.
It was a great game with a few major flaws.
Probably the best description one can give to any installment of TES. Each one had their fair share of flaws, some obvious, some not, and others that were entirely subjective, but each one was also good enough that each game has their own dedicated and active fanbase (you think people hating Oblivion for not being enough like Morrowind was bad? Wait 'till you hear about the people who hated Morrowind for not being enough like Daggerfall!).
(you think people hating Oblivion for not being enough like Morrowind was bad? Wait 'till you hear about the people who hated Morrowind for not being enough like Daggerfall!).
Both of them are idiots. All the TES games are good games. My opinion is that Oblivion (while being a great game) was just too.. bland. The game blew me out of the water the first time I played it, but after the second and third time the issues with the game really dawn on you. Oblivion in nature was supposed to be more like Daggerfall (or so todd howard has said) but it missed a lot of the stuff that was great in Daggerfall. They took the blandness and "traditional fantasy" aspect of Daggerfall, and didn't add back in the immense customization and nearly endless game-world that made Daggerfall a great game, and on top of that they ousted Morrowind's meticulous map detail. I mean Cryodil is pretty and fairly atmospheric, but if you were to remove the trees and grass you'd see how sterile and empty the landscape is.

Thankfully Bethesda made up for the blandness aspect of it when they released Shivering Isles. After doing just about everything I could in Cyrodil and walking into the Realm of the Madgod for the first time, it just felt so different from everything else I had done up to that point. It felt more alive and unique, and brought back some of the feelings they left behind in Morrowind. It's a shame they couldn't have done that to the main game...
