You have to right click to put the seeds in the ground, near water. Nizzotch has a Youtube video of it in action.

I know HOW to farm, was just wondering whether it needed to be near water or not. You cleared it up.
Though it begs the question, why do some people have balcony farm plots? Or plots on top of their castle? Makes no sense if there is no water nearby.

You don't HAVE to plant them near water. The water just makes them grow faster. But yeah, you can grow crops without water near them. Just takes a little longer..
