I think the guy has perfected the art of making huge caves. I dug a 3x3 shaft down into the earth, and reached what appeared to be a small cave. It ends up becoming dozens of tunnels, each similar yet different. I got lost for about 30 minutes in the tunnels, and used over 300 torches. A good reason why I stayed lost is, while trying to find the exit tunnel that went back towards the tunnel that branched off from the tunnel that my 3x3 shaft is semi-close to, I explored new tunnels, which made the whole journey back to the 3x3 shaft very confusing.

Prime example of why you should always, always explore new tunnels in segments. I always carve out a 2x2 return tunnel so it's easy to know where I'm going. Also, the fact that they're pitch black, and spiders could be down there, is reason enough to take it slowly :p
Also, I honestly love the new cave design system. Before, they'd just be underground caves, that, yeah, were cool. But they got boring fast.
Now we have them AND loads of those small spindly caves. Awesome.

Mining under floating islands is the best, found like 5 emerald veins so far and mobs rarely show up (unless you hit a cave).
Wow, this game never ceases to amaze me.
I've gotta document this, just the cave is crawling with fucking creepers. I've got well over 60 Iron ore, so I'll go stock up on arrows and armour, and perhaps wait till I have full hp. Anyways, I'll describe it for you.
I'm about 60 blocks underground. I'm digging a mine tunnel, scouting for ores. I find an iron ore vein dead smack center in my tunnel. I start mining them out, happy with what little resources I can get (at the time, I only had 20 or so iron ore).
I dig out some ore on the sides of my tunnel and I get scared. Water starts rushing in, like a great beast devouring my torches. If I don't act fast, I'll end up in pitch black, and perhaps under water. I could die here.
I hurriedly seal up the hole in the wall, but something caught my eye just as I closed it up. More resources. Only this time, an abundance of gold! (yes, I know gold is crap, but perhaps in the future it'll be worth something)
I carefully break open the wall again, and start draining the pool. This is a natural cave, some sort of travel tunnel. I follow it all the way down, it goes on for about 2-3 minutes. The cave is long! (keep in mind, it's a tunnel, not really a hollowed out cave). I start to lose patience, what if I end up getting lost, all for nothing? Only resources I have found so far was the gold. Just as I am about to turn back, I stumble upon a HUGE cavern. No matter how many torches I place, the ceiling is still pitch black. This place amazes me.
Resources are scattered everywhere. I jump up and down with glee, readying myself for the goldrush that is about to happen.
Ptew! Twang! I run for cover. There appears to be enemies in this cavern.. I will have to kill them all off.. I easily dispatch the zombies and creepers. It's those damn skeletons that trouble me. They must have been some sort of marksman gods in their past lives. Their aim is true, and I am badly hurt, but my armour saves me. I eventually dispatch of them, but there are many more left.
I retreat to a safe distance and decide to explore the other side of the cavern. The cavern floor is dotted with dangerous gaps that go on for god knows how long. I nimbly travel across the floor, avoiding the gaps. Something glowing red catches my eye, I prepare for the worst. Damn spiders. Luckily, however, it is not a spider. It is a cavern BELOW the one i'm in, with magma!
God, I can't wait to explore this thing. It's so far from my base, but I'll slowly start excavating speed tunnels to allow quick entry.
Thing is, it's so damn huge, that monsters can spawn in dark places I can't reach. Oh well.
Will take a long time, but I'll tame this cavern and make it a quarry..
I bought the game.
Indev is great fun.

Try "deep" when using float map type. It's really hard and challenging. I started on the highest floating isle, which had no vein at all. Now I managed to get 2 isles lower and started to find gold.
