Getting to the deeper end is total shit as you almost always spawn at the upper part of the level.
I'd rather have square maps.
I'll actually do what he suggested with a large deep floating map, set it to peaceful, and carefully dig my way down to survivable drops to the next island down, recover health, start again. Once I get to the bottom, I'll build a fake starter house out of dirt or whatever, save, then set back the difficulty so it's like I started a fresh game down there :buddy:

Doesn't help that lower islands are always pitch dark so you'll have mobs spawning everywhere on the surface.

reason to set up torches and build quick? *shrug*
besides, I like building up, it's almost impossible to build downward. I remember once though, I forged a water elevator by making a canal and draining a lake so it would flow off the side and straight to a lower island. I then rode the falling water down, and even when it ran out of source and fell faster than me, I'd fall back into it over and over as we went down, and it created a nice cushion to land in when we hit the island.
anyone remember that green foamy impact gel the soldiers dropped into from the beginning of Final Fantasy: Spirits Within?
You can dig up Flint in gravel (and possibly sand) now.

indev is addicting

:v:
We should be able to craft blocks of some kind of slowly burning material so that we can make large beacons. And when multiplayer indev eventually comes around, signs.
Oh yeah, and buckets. For fountains and wells and all sorts of crafting processes.
yea buckets is a good idea

That is such an awesome fort, but why so many torches? Ruins the awesomeness of it :(
Also, is that a PILLBOX I see in the bottom left? Fucking pillbox?! Genius.
Pillbox being 2 steps on top of each other, and 1 step on top of that, to make a sort of slot to shoot out of.
Torches to avoid mob spawning inside.
didn't notch mention buckets a while ago? Said something about being able to carry a single block of water or lava, which didn't really sound useful, but hey, if you've got X amount of buckets, you can carry a lot more I suppose.
Is making a house out of dirt a good idea?
Is making a house out of dirt a good idea?
better than making it out of wood, unless a creeper (?) comes knocking on your door

Yeah it's a pillbox.
Also, the torches are for keeping the mob from spawning inside my walls, there were zombies spawning inside my territory and coming into my house.

Why don't I introduce you to my friend

He'll blow your shit up
Just made a Megaman skin, the only problem is that both of his arms are blasters.

I personally think there needs to be a sort of digging monster, so that people will refrain from locking their doors with dirt, and a monster that can burn things (That comes a little later) so that people will not build their forts ENTIRELY out of wood.
However, It would make the game 200x harder.

I like the idea of a fire monster, or at least a monster that breathes fire. It would be cool trying to contain a forest fire started by an encounter with a fire enemy.
Torches to avoid mob spawning inside.
Even so, that many torches is overkill. I know mobs spawn in dark areas, but you don't need that many torches :o
Anyways, awesome fort nonetheless.
Just post your in-game name.
Also, I think I found something interesting. If you try and break rocks/minerals with anything other than a pick, you don't get any resources back.
Also, coal last longer than wood when used in a furnace.
I still feel like Notch should have approached this whole fire/flint and furnace thing differently. But oh well.
1 Piece of coal is enough for 8 bars of iron.
Zedo_Mann
Also, don't you need rocks to make a pick in the first place?
Christ, how do you get fire now?
Zedo_Mann

Wooden Pick.
Also the new system of mining rock/ore works on the system of what level your item is, if you're using a wood pick, then you're not going to be able to mine anything but plain rock, any type of ore will give you nothing.
A rock pick will be able to mine steel, steel can mine gold, gold is the same level as wood.
And so on so forth, or similar to that.

A flint from gravel, and a bar of steel from smelting steel ore.
Craft them like

I just skip wood altogether and spend the ~1 minute getting 3 stones to make a stone pick.

Wait, so how do you smelt without fire?
Wait, so how do you smelt without fire?
Make a furnace. It's a new object.
Just make a circle from stones like you would make an item chest from wood.

Ahh righto. Brilliant, thanks!
You can also kill pigs for raw porkchops and cook them in the furnace.
So...how does one make steel?
Is there an ore, or is it a mixture of ores?
There is no steel
Just Iron that looks like steel

Can't do that anymore, When you punch rock you get no cobblestone.
Saccn's and Venn's server are both down now...
