Click on server, type in irc.esper.net, then in channel put #minecraft.

Argh, no custom maps work for my server, all that happens is that I see some empty space filled with solid-unbreakable blocks for a half second then disconnect.
Then I am greeted by a error message saying "java.lang.nullpointerexception" or something like that.
