If you have torches, mine during the night. Or work around the coastline. I don't think that monsters spawn in water so as long as you work along the coast facing inland they can't sneak up on you.
And I think that because of the way level generation works, deep maps (that aren't floating) are waaay harder than any other kind. I think the level generator tries to spread the resources evenly throughout the map so if you make a deep map it's extremely rare to find any ores exposed in cliffs on the surface.
In my current survival game I scoured the entire island and didn't find a single cliff face containing ore. Eventually I had to dig straight down about 30 blocks before finding any.
It's disturbing how easy it is to break out of the spawnjail on "venn177 - Facepunch Nazi Regime", knowing that griefers can get out any time they want.

Started a new game, decided to increase difficulty from peaceful every night, so I went out to hunt on easy the second knight.
10 mobs later and I was on 3 hearts, I head for my base...
Two skeletons archers rush me, I kill them, a creeper backstabs me, blows up my house entirely (wood and glass) and the zombie bitchslaps me and I lie on the ground like a crying sissy with red in my eyes.
The second knight?
