Anything can ride anything. Saddles work for any entity. Minecarts are a more advanced version of saddles in that when you place the cart, it's actually like placing a saddle on a pig, but it's one block and not something you put ON a block. Saddles themselves just attach you to the pig right now, but it can work for any entity that can hold a saddle, which, as of right now, is just you.

I thought for a second Notch ninja'd in the ability to ride other things.
We need someone to model a horse for notch. It could be 3 x 1 x 2. And when you saddle it. You can control it for 2x speed! When you get off of it, you can stick a pole in the ground and the tamed horse will not wander x amount of blocks away from it. The only problem with that is the way notch has the game written, and it'd disappear if you went to far.
Torches should last like 3 days. Lanterns should last something like 10

i saw an interesting idea about them running out on SA. it was that they run out if the player doesn't see them for a long time, which is reasonable.
