But, power cables can be destroyed or overheat (Depends from which material its made from) Once a cable is overheating, light sources will flicker on and off. The player must follow the power cable and look for black smoke. once found the player must replace the broken cable.

Just make them go on/off using red powder. no need for power cables

Well its not a full plan i know that :colbert:
And the overheating is just to add gameplay to it, its not like very 5 minutes, but if you are using a weak material it could be overheating between 30-60 minutes

Sounds like there's just going to be a lot of hassle for no real use, we already got redstone for all the electricity issues so I don't see why Notch should add a new sort of power cable.

Is anyone else hearing random noises play every so often? Like gongs, church bells and ukuleles.
In my opinion, redstone dust should be destroyed when you walk on it, and you should be able to craft wire out of it that could be placed on walls, ceilings and such. It wouldn't get destroyed when you walk on it either, obviously.
Also, 9 redstone dusts = redstone block that glows when you step on it / hit it, just like the ore.
