I think by alternative technology he means a mixture of steampunk and magic, like in that shitty game "Damnation"

Really, if minecraft becomes all fantasy I will stop playing. I really really love the idea of small amounts of fantasy elements (zombies, dragons, the 'dug too deep' scenario, fuck, even simple weapon/armour enchantments or potions would be cool ) but if there ends up being magic and spells and fireballs and mana, I will ragequit. Hard.

I think the only spells he would add would be buffs. Like faster mining/chopping/digging for a limited time, depending on the spell. Other than that it would all be alchemy and such.

People could build steam turbines etc then, that doesn't seem too out of place for minecraft. We even had air pumps (and water, too, they came beforehand) which could be used for uh.. things.
BTW the noise you hear in a fridge is usually a pump, it transfers a liquid around the fridge bringing the heat out the back.
However i much prefer the magic and mystery technology, say you actually found some redstone and needed to use it to survive i wouldnt care that it didnt make sense, id just use it, sure if it was in my garden id send it to some scientists though.
Notch already said he was not adding a hunger bar.
And the entire concept of having a fridge is too complicated. Notch wants things to be simple.

Actually, disregarding firearms, most technology up to the 1800s wouldn't be overpowered / out of place in minecraft.
I mean, it isn't until then someone invents a [b]working[/b] parachute, or a steam engine.
(It's also the century Volta made his battery, so that's cool too, even though electric generators were around beforehand)
We have TNT (dynamite) in minecraft, but that wasn't even invented until 1866..

Found this amazing overhang next to my spawn.

Phew, found him. I apparently left my front door open and he walked out to play in the snow, but got lost. I spent all night searching for him, I heard two pigs oinking and I found him. He fell into my trap for monsters with his friend, but he's perfectly safe. (He has a friend that lives near the mines). I tried to take both of them out and let them stay in my house, but they wouldn't leave. It's fine though, it's warm where they are and I will give them food from time to time. He also has his friend now too. I'm very happy he's safe.

When I came down to check on them, He came up to the class, I said hi to him for you, soon after he started jumping up and down :buddy:
Also, they invited a creeper over and now they're all partying and jumping all over the place. :v: I love these guys :3:

I think you might be mixing up Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft. Toady One is using 1400 as a rough cutoff for the time-period, but I don't think Notch has ever actually mentioned anything like that.
